Chapter 10 - The Price of Greed

Officers stepped out of the patrol cars with flashlights drawn, their commands ringing crisp and non-negotiable in the night.
"Tyler Vance, Patricia Vance, step away from the gate and put your hands behind your back!"
Tyler spun around, looking for an escape route, but two officers tackled him directly onto the hood of his rental car. Handcuffs clicked shut with a harsh metallic snap. He cursed, thrashing wildly, screaming obscenities toward the mansion gates, spitting threats into the gravel.
Patricia offered no resistance. She simply collapsed to her knees on the asphalt, sobbing uncontrollably as an officer read her Miranda rights. As they guided her into the back of the cruiser, she caught my eye through the open window. For the first time, there was no arrogance, no condescending sneer, no false pity. There was only the hollow, bankrupt reality of a woman who had sacrificed everything—her integrity, her family, and her soul—to protect a monster of her own creation.
Richard Vance walked over to Detective Miller, handing him the full file containing the original signatures, the forged documents, the banking records, and the forensic accountant's sworn affidavit.
"Everything you need is documented in chronological order, Detective," Richard stated. "Every dollar stolen from Nora and baby Lily has been cross-referenced with Tyler's casino deposits in Nevada and New Jersey."
"Thank you, Richard," Detective Miller said, nodding solemnly. "This case is ironclad. They won't see bail before dawn, and given the interstate wire fraud, the feds will take primary jurisdiction by tomorrow afternoon."
As the cruisers drove away, their red lights disappearing into the mist, a heavy silence settled over the grounds.
Grandma Margaret turned to me, taking both of my trembling hands into hers. "It is over, Nora. The parasites will never feed on Evan’s legacy again."
"It doesn't bring Evan back," I whispered, the tears I had held back all night finally spilling over. "I miss him so much, Grandma. Every time I look at Lily, I see his eyes."
"I know, my darling," Grandma said softly, pulling me into a warm, fierce embrace. "Evan was the best of us. And you gave him the greatest gift he ever knew: a family built on love, not greed. From this day forward, you and Lily will never know cold, hunger, or fear again."

We walked back into the house together. For the first time in nine months, the suffocating weight on my chest lifted. Upstairs, Lily slept soundly, wrapped in clean blankets, safe within the fortress of a grandmother's unwavering devotion.
