Chapter 4 - Unmasked

"Austin, hang that phone up right now!" Margaret shrieked, scrambling off the bed and lunging for my arm.
I didn't even look up. As she reached for the phone, I brought my forearm up in a sharp, defensive block that struck her collarbone, sending her stumbling back against the mahogany dresser. Perfume bottles clattered and shattered against the mirror.
"Stay back from my wife," I commanded.
"Sir? Sir, I hear shouting. Units are three minutes out," the dispatcher said over the speaker. "Keep yourself and your wife in a secure room if possible."
"I have the situation under control," I replied into the microphone. "Just get the medics here. Now."
Carla sank to her knees by the open suitcase, weeping uncontrollably, burying her face in her hands. "We're going to prison. Oh God, we're going to prison. Austin, please... I’m your sister! We grew up together! You can't do this to us!"
"You stood there with a framing hammer while our mother dragged my pregnant wife across the floor by her hair," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "You talked about forging legal documents to rob my child. You talked about throwing Irene down the basement stairs to murder her."
"We weren't really going to do that!" Carla sobbed, tears cutting mascara tracks down her pale cheeks. "It was just... talk! We were just trying to scare her so she'd give up the safe code!"
"I have seventeen minutes of continuous high-definition video," I said, holding up my phone. "Every single word. Every swing of that hammer. Every time Mom kicked Irene in the ribs. It's already syncing to my cloud storage and backed up to my corporate legal server."
Margaret froze. The desperate maternal act vanished completely. Her spine straightened, her jaw clenched, and the mask slipped off entirely, exposing the bitter, venomous sociopath underneath.
"You think you’re so righteous, don't you, Austin?" Margaret hissed, her eyes narrowing into slits. "You always were just like your father. Rigid. Arrogant. Sitting on millions while Carla and I had to beg you for crumbs!"
"Crumbs?" I stared at her, genuinely sickened. "I gave you four hundred thousand dollars to pay off Dad's mortgage. I gave Carla two hundred and fifty thousand dollars across three failed businesses. I paid for your European cruises. I paid your luxury car leases. I gave you whatever you asked for because I thought we were a family!"
"That was our money to begin with!" Margaret spat, stepping closer, pointing a manicured, trembling finger at me. "Your father built that empire on my back! Thirty years I spent putting up with that cold, unfeeling man! And what did he do? He left me a miserable monthly stipend and tied the entire fortune into a generational trust for a grandchild that didn't even exist yet! Why? To spite me! To keep me under his thumb from beyond the grave!"
"And Irene discovered that you were siphoning money from Dad’s offshore account before he died, didn't she?" I asked, piecing together the broken puzzle.
Margaret didn't answer, but the twitch in her left eyelid told me everything.
"That's why you wanted the files from the safe," I said. "It wasn't just about changing the trust to steal the future inheritance. You needed to destroy the audit trail Irene found. She’s an accountant, Margaret. She was helping me reconcile Dad's remaining estate taxes."
In the distance, the wailing howl of multiple sirens sliced through the quiet suburban night, growing louder with every passing second.
"They're here," Irene whispered weakly from the floor, clutching my sleeve with trembling fingers. "Austin... the baby isn't moving. I can't feel him moving..."
Panic pierced through my anger like an ice pick. I turned my back completely on Margaret and Carla, lifting Irene gently into my arms, cradling her head against my chest.

"Stay with me, Irene," I begged, my voice cracking for the first time. "Breathe. Just breathe. Help is right outside."
