Chapter 5 - The Paper Trail

"It's a fake! It's an AI deepfake!" Chloe screamed, her voice spiraling into complete, unhinged hysteria. She lunged at Marcus, her manicured nails swiping toward his face, but Marcus caught her wrists in mid-air, twisting them down with effortless precision.

"Don't touch me, Chloe," Marcus said quietly. "We're way past the point of lying."

Uncle Vance stepped in, grabbing Chloe by the shoulders and pulling her back against the hallway wall. "Chloe, sit down! What in God's name have you done?"

"Marcus is trying to ruin me!" Chloe sobbed, thrashing against her uncle's grip. "He's jealous because his family has no money! He's framing me to protect Elias! They're in this together!"

"If that was a deepfake," Marcus said, keeping his phone held high for everyone to see, "then explain this."

He swiped to an image on his screen and turned it toward my father.

It was a high-resolution photograph of a yellow carbon-copy receipt from *Midwest Gold & Pawn Exchange* on State Street. The item description read: *1968 Cartier Platinum Emerald Tennis Bracelet, authenticated.*

The payout amount written in blue ballpoint pen made my mother scream:

*$28,500.00.*

Signed by: *Chloe Vance.* Dated: *November 18th.* Six days ago.

"You pawned your grandmother's bracelet?" Dad choked out. He looked like an old man having a stroke. The ferocious, terrifying patriarch who had smashed a hammer into the dinner table ten minutes ago was completely gone, replaced by a shattered, hollow shell. "You pawned Nana's dying gift?"

"She didn't just pawn the bracelet, Mr. Vance," Marcus said, stepping past Chloe and walking straight down the back hallway toward Chloe's childhood room. "Come look at what she did with the charity money."

"Marcus, don't you dare go in there!" Chloe shrieked, fighting against Uncle Vance with such violent desperation that her designer sweater ripped at the shoulder seam. "Dad! Don't let him go in there! It's private! He's violating my privacy!"

Dad didn't stop him. In fact, Dad looked like he couldn't move his feet at all.

I followed Marcus into Chloe’s old bedroom. The room was preserved like a shrine: pink floral wallpaper, high school cheerleading trophies on the mahogany shelves, and a pristine vanity with an antique brass mirror. The small decorative padlock on the vanity drawer was indeed severed, lying neatly on the glass surface.

Marcus didn't touch the vanity.

He walked directly to the brass heating grate on the hardwood floor near the window. He knelt down, pulled a multi-tool from his pocket, and popped the register cover off the ductwork.

Reaching his arm down into the darkness of the sheet metal pipe, Marcus pulled out a thick, heavy bundle wrapped entirely in gray industrial duct tape.

He tossed it onto Chloe's bed. It landed with the unmistakable, dense *thwack* of bundled banknotes.

"What is that?" Dad asked, appearing in the doorway, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the syllables. Mom was clutching his arm, weeping hysterically, her eyes darting between the tape and her daughter.

"Chloe didn't steal fifteen thousand dollars from your safe, Mr. Vance," Marcus said, pulling a pocketknife from his belt and slicing through the layers of duct tape.

He peeled back the plastic.

Stacks of crisp, sequentially numbered hundred-dollar bills spilled out over the floral bedspread. Along with them tumbled dozens of white slips of paper covered in red ink.

"She took forty thousand dollars from your retirement safe," Marcus said, holding up the paperwork. "And these are margin call notices from an unregulated offshore crypto-gambling platform called *BitStake Royale*."

Cousin Tim let out a low whistle from the hallway. "Holy crap... she blew forty grand on leverage tokens?"

"She blew through eighty grand over the last four months," Marcus corrected, his voice cutting through the room like an ice pick. "She drained her savings, she drained thirty thousand dollars from our joint wedding fund, she stole the family heirloom, and she cracked your safe using the combination she found written in the back of your bible."

"You... you stole my retirement?" Dad whispered, the color draining from his eyes until they looked completely glazed over. "The money for your mother's hip surgery?"

Chloe slid down against the hallway wall, collapsing onto the hardwood floor in a heap of crumpled cashmere and tangled blonde hair. The theatrical tears were gone. Her face transformed from the weeping, innocent victim into an ugly, sneering mask of pure contempt.

"You were never going to give me my fair share anyway, Dad!" Chloe spat, her voice ringing out through the house, vile and sharp. "You spent hundreds of thousands bailing Uncle Vance out of his failed car wash! You paid for Elias's fancy technical school! What did I get? A stupid vintage bracelet and a pat on the head!"

"We gave you everything!" Mom screamed, lunging forward with her hands clawed, only for Aunt Celia to catch her around the waist. "We gave you your apartment! We paid your rent! We blamed your brother for your sins!"

"Elias was easy to blame because he's a pathetic loser!" Chloe screamed back, venom flying from her teeth. "And you believed me! You believed me every single time! When I took the five thousand from the study last year, you kicked him out in ten minutes flat! You didn't even ask for proof! You hated him so much you wanted an excuse to get rid of him!"
