Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Deal

Two weeks passed in dead silence. I threw myself into my work as a structural engineer, taking double shifts and working through weekends to keep my mind from drifting back to that dining table.

Then, on a rainy Tuesday evening, Paige ambushed me outside my apartment building. She was standing under an umbrella, shivering in a beige trench coat, looking exhausted.

"Don't walk away," she pleaded as I reached for my apartment keys without acknowledging her. "Please, Ethan. Just five minutes."

"You have two minutes, Paige. Then I’m calling the police for harassment."

"It wasn't what you think," she said, her voice trembling. "Mom made us do it. We didn't want Claire there."

"You sat at that table. You kept quiet when I walked in. You called me two days before to make sure I’d be walking into the slaughterhouse."

"Because Mom threatened to cut off my tuition payments!" Paige blurted out, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks. "Dad's business had a bad quarter, Ethan. They couldn't cover my final semester at nursing school. And Claire... Claire offered to pay it."

The world seemed to tilt slightly on its axis. "What did you just say?"

"Claire's father... he gave Mom a bridge loan for Dad’s store," Paige sobbed, wrapping her arms around herself. "Fifty thousand dollars, Ethan. Claire told Mom that she missed the family, that she felt terrible about how the divorce went down, and that her family would forgive the interest on the loan if Mom helped her 'reconcile' with you. Mom orchestrated the whole thing because she needed Claire’s money."

I stared at my little sister. The puzzle pieces suddenly snapped together with brutal clarity. Mom hadn't invited Claire out of misguided neutrality. She hadn't done it out of some bizarre maternal desire for peace.

She had sold me out. She traded my dignity and mental health for fifty grand to bail out my father's failing hardware shop, using Thanksgiving as the stage to force me into playing nice with their benefactors.

"And you went along with it," I said, my voice eerily calm. "You let her sell me to Claire so you could get your nursing degree."

"I was trapped!" Paige cried. "Ethan, we didn't have a choice!"

"There's always a choice," I told her, stepping inside the building's lobby and pressing the door release. "And you made yours. Now enjoy the tuition, Paige. Because you bought it with your brother."
