Chapter 10 - Building a Real Life

Three weeks passed like a calm after a violent storm.
The social pages had a field day with the scandal. The Vance family issued a formal press release announcing the annulment of Emily’s marriage to Mark Anthony Sterling due to "irreconcilable fraud."
Richard Vance pulled every single dollar from Mark’s firm. Without the Vance credit line, the subcontractors halted construction on three multi-million-dollar estates. Within two weeks, Mark's partners forced him out, and the company filed for Chapter 7 liquidation.
I sat at my kitchen island on a bright Tuesday morning, drinking coffee while Luke and Owen were busy at the small table, coloring pictures of fire trucks.
My boutique interior design firm was thriving. In fact, since the incident, several prominent clients who had heard the story—including several women from Pinecrest who despised Mark’s arrogance—had reached out to hire my company.
My phone buzzed on the counter. It was an email from my family attorney, Sarah Jenkins.
*Claire,* the email read, *I have finalized the protective filings. Mark attempted to petition for an emergency paternity hearing last Friday, but the court clerk rejected the motion. Because he formally signed the waiver through his legal proxy four years ago and failed to contest it within the statutory three-year window, he has no legal standing under state law. You and the boys are completely safe. He cannot touch them.*
I set the phone down and closed my eyes, letting the relief wash over me.
"Mommy, look!" Luke shouted, holding up a paper with scribbled red and yellow crayon. "I drew a castle for you!"
"It's beautiful, sweetie," I said, walking over and kneeling between them, wrapping my arms around their tiny shoulders.

Everything I had suffered, every tear I had cried in that lonely bedroom four years ago, had led to this exact moment. I had my boys. I had my dignity. I had my peace.
Or so I thought.
