Chapter 10 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Three days later, the conference room on the sixth floor of the Federal Building smelled of stale coffee and industrial disinfectant. Across the long rectangular table sat Victoria Caldwell, Tiffany’s mother. Unlike her husband and daughter, Victoria had attempted to play the innocent victim, claiming she was merely a dutiful housewife who had no knowledge of Julian’s complex corporate maneuvers.
She wore a plain black dress, her hands neatly folded over a designer handbag that federal agents had already tagged for civil forfeiture.
"Eleanor," Victoria began, offering a fragile, mournful smile that didn't reach her calculating eyes. "This entire ordeal is an unfortunate misunderstanding between families. Julian was under immense financial strain. Men make reckless choices when their businesses falter. But surely, as mothers, you and I can find a way to resolve this without ruining our children’s lives."
I sat across from her with Arthur on my right and Prosecutor Sterling on my left. I didn't touch the coffee in front of me.
"Your daughter assaulted me in public, Victoria," I said, leaning forward. "And you stood right beside her, smiling, waiting for me to apologize for daring to question your fictitious wealth."
"Tiffany is young! She was overwhelmed by the stress of the wedding!" Victoria pleaded, her mask beginning to crack. "If you drop the civil complaints and withdraw the fraud affidavit, we can negotiate the return of the funds. Julian has assets in offshore trusts—"
"Julian has nothing," Arthur interrupted sharply, slapping a thick folder onto the center of the table. "We executed a freeze order on the clearing account in Belize seventy-two hours ago. The three million dollars Daniel was tricked into mortgaging has been fully recovered and returned to the Vance estate escrow."
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted frantically between Arthur and the prosecutor.
"Furthermore," Sterling stated, leaning over the table, "your son-in-law Daniel has spent the last forty-eight hours providing state investigators with full access to his phone records, cloud backups, and recorded phone conversations. We have Julian on tape admitting that the Elm Street liens were intended to be liquidated before the wedding reception even ended, leaving the Vance family bankrupt while you three boarded a chartered flight to Zurich."
Victoria shrank back into her leather chair, her hands trembling violently. The illusion of royal superiority was dead. All that remained was an aging con artist staring down the barrel of a ten-year mandatory minimum sentence in federal prison.
"You don't understand," Victoria whispered, her voice finally breaking. "We owe money to people... dangerous people in Chicago. If Julian doesn't pay, they won't just take the house..."
May you like
"That is no longer Eleanor Vance's concern," Arthur said firmly. "Sign the surrender of all claims, Victoria. Or we add international wire fraud and extortion to your indictment before lunch."
With a trembling hand and tears finally smearing her heavy eyeliner, Victoria Caldwell picked up the pen and signed away the last shreds of her family's freedom.
