Chapter 11 - The Letter in Gerald’s Study

By midnight, the dishes were washed, the leftovers were packed neatly into containers, and the house was wrapped in deep, restful silence. Daniel and Maya were asleep in the upstairs guest bedroom, while Patrick lay curled on the sofa in the den, holding his sleeping son close to his chest.

I couldn't sleep. The adrenaline that had carried me through the confrontation had finally burned out, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion.

I poured myself a cup of chamomile tea and walked quietly down the darkened hallway into Gerald’s private study at the rear of the house. The room still smelled faintly of his pipe tobacco and old leather-bound books. It was my sanctuary whenever the world felt too heavy.

I sat at his rolltop mahogany desk, running my fingers over the polished grain. I opened the small brass drawer where Gerald had kept his personal journal, wanting to feel close to his steady wisdom.

As I pulled the drawer out, I felt something catch at the back of the track. A folded piece of stationery, yellowed at the edges, had been taped beneath the underside of the upper compartment.

Puzzled, I gently pried the tape loose.

On the outside of the envelope, written in Gerald’s unmistakable, sharp cursive, were the words:

*“To Eleanor — Open only if Patrick brings Kristen into the family business.”*

My breath hitched in my throat. Gerald had written this five years ago, just weeks before his sudden heart attack. At the time, Patrick and Kristen had only been dating for a year. Gerald had always seemed polite to her, never voicing any open objections.

With trembling fingers, I broke the wax seal and unfolded the single sheet of parchment.

As my eyes scanned the first three sentences, the teacup slipped from my hand, shattering against the hardwood floor in the dead of the night.

The letter did not warn me about Kristen’s greed. It revealed an unthinkable truth: Kristen wasn’t a stranger who had married into our family by chance. She had been sent into Patrick’s life deliberately—and she possessed a secret about Gerald’s past that could destroy everything our family owned before the sun came up...
