Chapter 4 - THE MEDICAL CONSPIRACY

Nathan pulled a stool up to the side of my gurney and sat down, resting his elbows on his knees.
"I brought in Dr. Aris Thorne, our chief neurosurgeon," Nathan said quietly. "He reviewed the scans twenty minutes ago. The fracture from the ceramic platter actually shifted the bone fragment inward, compressing the tissue right next to this old metallic object. That’s why you had a brief loss of consciousness. Dr. Thorne wants to operate immediately to elevate the fractured bone and extract the foreign object before it causes a major hemorrhagic stroke."
"An operation?" I asked, panic surging through my veins. "Brain surgery?"
"Yes. But here’s the critical part, Melissa," Nathan leaned in closer, his voice barely audible over the hum of the medical equipment. "Because this involves an unidentified foreign body associated with an undisclosed historical trauma, Dr. Thorne is legally required to log the extracted object into evidence. If that object has a serial number, a manufacturing mark, or matching ballistics, state law enforcement will open a full forensic investigation into whoever cared for you as a child."
Before I could answer, the curtain around my bay was violently yanked aside.
"Where is she?!"
My father strode into the room, his jacket unbuttoned, his face red with anger and whiskey. Caroline trailed behind him, looking nervously at the nurses in the hallway.
"Sir, you cannot be back here," Nathan stood up immediately, placing his body firmly between my father and my bed. "This is a restricted trauma area."
"I’m her father!" Dad yelled, pointing a thick finger at Nathan. "I have a right to know what’s taking so long! She had a little cut on her head, for God's sake! You’ve had her back here for hours! We’re taking her home!"
"She has a skull fracture, Mr. Carter," Nathan said coldly, his voice dripping with professional authority. "And we just identified a chronic internal lesion from a severe childhood injury that requires emergency neurosurgical intervention."
The moment Nathan said the words childhood injury, my father froze.
The color completely drained from his face. His eyes darted from Nathan to the CT scan images still displaying on the digital monitor beside my bed. His jaw twitched violently.
"What... what kind of lesion?" Dad stammered, his booming confidence instantly vanishing, replaced by a dark, terrified hostility.
"A metallic foreign object embedded near her temporal lobe," Nathan replied, watching my father's reaction intently. "It appears to have been there since she was five or six years old."
Caroline gasped, grabbing Dad’s arm. "Dad... what is he talking about? Is that from when—"
"Shut up, Caroline!" Dad whipped around and snarled at her so viciously that she jumped backward. He turned back to Nathan, his fists clenching at his sides. "That’s a mistake! She never had any brain injuries as a kid! She fell off a kitchen counter when she was six! The doctor stitched her up and sent her home! You people are trying to drum up expensive medical bills!"
"Mr. Carter, the imaging doesn't lie," Nathan said smoothly. "We are prepping her for surgery right now."
"No!" Dad shouted, stepping toward my gurney. "No surgery! She isn't signing anything! As her family, we refuse consent! We’re transferring her to a private facility in Philadelphia right now!"
"I am thirty-four years old, Dad," I said, my voice shaking with rage as I glared at him through my tears. "I make my own medical decisions. And I am consenting to the surgery."
Dad stared at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying blend of panic and hatred. "Melissa... you don't know what you're doing. You're going to destroy this family over a stupid mistake!"

"Security!" Nathan called out toward the hallway. Two armed hospital security officers stepped into the bay immediately. "Escort this man and his daughter out of the clinical area. If they refuse to leave the building, place them under arrest for trespass."
"You traitor!" Dad screamed as the guards grabbed his arms and forced him backward down the hallway. His voice echoed off the concrete walls of the ER, chilling me to the bone. "You selfish, ungrateful bitch! After everything I did to protect you! You'll regret this, Melissa! You hear me?! You'll regret this!"
