Chapter 4 - The Matriarch's Fury

The metallic snap of the handcuffs echoed across the ballroom like a gunshot.
Julian thrashed against the wood of the podium, his face red and veins bulging along his neck. "Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am? Do you know who my family is? Mother! Call the district attorney! Call Robert right now!"
Eleanor Sterling didn't pull out her phone.
She walked slowly toward the stairs of the stage, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood. She ascended the steps, neither looking at Julian thrashing under the detective's grip nor at the sea of socialites frantically recording the spectacle with their phones.
She walked straight up to Marcus Vance, who handed her a slim leather binder.
"You knew?" Eleanor asked Marcus, her voice dangerously quiet.
"Mrs. Sterling," Marcus said respectfully, "Mrs. Evelyn Sterling retained my firm four months ago, after she discovered the chemical residue on her art catalog. We have spent the last sixteen weeks securing federal subpoenas, preserving lab evidence, and auditing the Sterling Family Trust accounts."
Eleanor opened the binder. On the top page was a transcribed conversation.
I knew what it was. It was the recording from the library door I had captured on my phone five weeks prior.
Marcus tapped a button on his tablet, and the ballroom’s sound system sprang to life once more. This time, it wasn't my voice.
It was Julian’s unmistakable, smooth baritone:
*“The evaluations are almost complete. After the baby arrives, we'll have what we need.”*
Then Vanessa’s voice, purring: *“And his mother? Eleanor won't let you push Evelyn into an institution without asking questions.”*
Julian’s recorded laugh crackled through the speakers, loud and cruel: *“My mother is a dinosaur holding onto tea parties and dead traditions. The moment the trust principal unlocks, I’m removing her from the foundation board for executive incompetence. She won't be making decisions anymore. She’ll get a stipend in Florida and she’ll stay there. The baby is the key to the entire fortune. Once Evelyn is declared unfit, nobody can stop us.”*
The ballroom was so quiet you could hear Julian’s ragged breathing against the podium.
Eleanor stood frozen. The proud, untouchable matriarch of Manhattan society looked down at the transcription in her hands, her knuckles whitening until they were bloodless.
Slowly, she turned around.
Julian looked up at her from the floor, his eyes wide with a desperate, pathetic plea. "Mother... listen to me. That was out of context. Vanessa was pushing me, she was manipulating me—"
*Slap.*
The crack of Eleanor’s palm against Julian’s cheek was so hard and sharp that Julian’s head jerked sideways.
"You dishonorable, venomous coward," Eleanor whispered, her voice shaking with an intensity I had never heard in all my years in her presence. "You poisoned a mother carrying Sterling blood. And you thought you could discard me like an old coat?"
May you like
She stepped back, turning her back on him completely. She looked directly at the police officers.
"Take him out of my sight."
