Chapter 11 - The Knock in the Night

By 10:30 PM, the chaos of the day had finally quieted into an eerie, heavy calm.

I returned to the St. Regis penthouse. The driver who had rammed the gate had already folded under FBI interrogation; his name was Tommy Ricks, a petty felon hired by Uncle Dave for twenty thousand dollars in cash to retrieve hard drives hidden inside the wall of my suburban home office—hard drives containing encrypted off-ledger bank accounts. Dave’s entire financial lifeline was now in federal custody. Bradley Cole, my traitorous corporate controller, had been arrested at JFK Airport attempting to board a flight to Dubai.

The legal vise had crushed every single arm of the conspiracy.

I stood beside the master bedroom doorway, watching Amy. She was propped up on the bed, reading a children’s book in a quiet, melodic murmur while Frederick suckled on a bottle, his big blue eyes staring up at her with complete trust and comfort. The nightmare was fading from her face, replaced by the warmth of a mother who finally felt secure.

She looked up and smiled at me—a tired, beautiful, genuine smile.

"Is it really over?" she asked softly.

I walked over, kissed the top of her head, and gently stroked Frederick’s soft hair. "Evelyn and Mason are locked away. Bradley is in federal custody. The house is completely secured by armed guards until we sell it. We’re buying a new place, Amy. Somewhere far away from Pennsylvania. A fresh start for the three of us."

"I’d love that," she whispered, leaning her head against my chest. "Just us."

An hour later, both Amy and Frederick were fast asleep, the room filled with the peaceful rhythm of their breathing. I poured myself a glass of scotch and stepped out onto the private penthouse terrace, staring into the dark expanse of the city below. For the first time in days, the suffocating tension in my shoulders began to uncoil.

Then, my private phone vibrated on the glass patio table.

It wasn't an incoming call. It was a push notification from the penthouse’s proprietary front-door camera system.

A cold chill ran down the back of my neck. No one was supposed to have access to this private floor without clearance from the lobby security team downstairs.

I unlocked the screen and opened the live feed.

The camera showed the dimly lit corridor right outside our penthouse suite. Standing directly in front of the reinforced mahogany door was a solitary figure clad in a dark rain slicker, face concealed beneath the shadow of a low cap.

The figure didn't attempt to pick the lock. Instead, they raised a gloved hand and gently held a handwritten note up to the lens of the camera.

Written in bold, jagged black marker were four words:

*CHECK THE BABY'S CRIB.*

Before my heart could beat its next stroke, three heavy, deliberate knocks echoed through the silent apartment from the service door behind the kitchen.
