Chapter 8 - The Fall from Grace

While Mom finally slept peacefully in a king-sized bed wrapped in eight-hundred-thread-count Egyptian cotton, Richard and Vanessa were learning the true meaning of rock bottom.
The cold autumn rain pounded mercilessly against the cracked windshield of a battered 2012 Honda Civic—the only asset the deputies had allowed them to drive away in, as it was registered under an old company auxiliary account that my legal team hadn't seized yet.
Vanessa sat in the passenger seat, shivering violently under a thin trench coat. Her designer makeup was smeared into black streaks across her cheeks, and her platinum hair hung in limp, wet strings.
"This is impossible!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her designer handbag against the dashboard. "Call your bank, Richard! Call your partners! Call anyone! We cannot be sleeping in a car! Do you know who my father is? If he finds out we were kicked out like stray dogs, he’ll have a heart attack!"
Richard didn't answer. He sat clutching the steering wheel with white knuckles, staring into the flickering neon sign of a dilapidated roadside motel on the outskirts of the county. His tailored tuxedo jacket was soaked through, missing two buttons from when he had tried to shove past the sheriff’s deputies at the gate.
"Shut up, Vanessa," Richard muttered through clenched teeth.
"Excuse me?!" Vanessa’s voice pitched into an ear-splitting scream. "You tell me to shut up? You promised me an empire! You told me your sister was a nobody working in corporate middle management! You told me that old hag of a mother had nothing left to her name! And now? We are penniless! My social circle will crucify me! Tomorrow morning, every woman in the country club will be laughing at my face!"
"I said SHUT UP!" Richard roared, slamming his fist onto the steering wheel, the horn blaring in the desolate motel parking lot. He turned on her, his eyes bloodshot and crazed. "Who was the one who insisted on putting my mother in the laundry room, huh? Who made her wash your feet like a slave? If you hadn't pushed her, if you hadn't parade your cruelty in front of Emily, none of this would have happened tonight!"
"Don't you dare blame me!" Vanessa spat back, venom dripping from every syllable. "You enjoyed watching her beg just as much as I did! You loved feeling like a king! You're a coward, Richard! A pathetic, weak little man who hid behind my father's connections!"
Trembling with rage, Vanessa pulled off her three-carat diamond engagement ring and threw it directly into Richard’s face. It struck his cheekbone, leaving a red scratch, before falling into the dark gap between the car seats.
Richard ignored the pain. With shaking fingers, he pulled out his phone and dialed his father-in-law, Walter Sterling, the billionaire real estate tycoon whose name Vanessa had paraded like a royal title.
The phone rang four times before a gruff, icy voice picked up.
"Walter... Walter, thank God," Richard pleaded, his arrogance completely dissolving into desperate sobs. "There's been a catastrophic misunderstanding. Emily—my sister—she orchestrated a hostile takeover. She sent the sheriffs. We're on the street, Walter. We need fifty thousand dollars wired immediately, just for emergency lodging and legal retainer—"
"Richard," Walter Sterling interrupted, his voice colder than the northern wind outside. "Do you have any idea what just happened thirty minutes ago?"
Richard froze. "What?"
"The board of Hawthorne-Sterling Capital just received an emergency notice from Apex Global Holdings," Walter said, his tone razor-sharp. "Emily Hawthorne is the majority shareholder of Apex. Within fifteen minutes, she pulled all institutional backing from our commercial port project. Our stock plummeted forty percent in after-hours trading. The SEC has already flagged our joint venture for fraudulent accounting because of your unauthorized transfers."
"Walter, please—"
"Listen to me carefully, you worthless parasite," Walter snarled. "Vanessa is my daughter, but you are nothing. If you ever contact my office again, I will personally hand over your off-the-books tax records to the federal prosecutor. As far as I'm concerned, you never existed."
The call clicked dead.
A dial tone buzzed in the dead silence of the car. Richard slowly lowered the phone, his breathing shallow and rapid.

"What did he say?" Vanessa demanded, fear finally breaking through her hysteria. "Richard! What did my father say?!"
Richard turned his head toward her. A hollow, terrifying smile spread across his pale lips. "Your father... just threw us to the wolves."
