Chapter 8 - The Legal War

By dawn, the Suburban pulled through the wrought-iron security gates of my estate in Bedford, New York.
Surrounded by eighty acres of dense hemlock woods and protected by an eight-foot perimeter fence with round-the-clock private security, the stone manor was an impenetrable fortress.
I settled Anna and the twins into the south wing guest cottage, a warm, two-story house with a roaring stone fireplace, a fully stocked kitchen, and toys brought over from the caretaker’s family. For the first time in days, Maya and Samuel laughed, chasing a golden retriever puppy across the Persian rugs while Anna watched, a look of cautious peace washing over her face.
Meanwhile, in the library of the main house, a war room had been established.
Harrison Cole sat surrounded by three junior partners, two forensic accountants, and laptops glowing with financial data. Empty espresso cups littered the mahogany table.
"We found the bleed," Harrison said without looking up from his monitor as I walked in. "Richard Vance isn't just broke. He’s leveraged past his eyeballs. He took out thirty million dollars in bridge loans from an offshore shadow-lender based in the Cayman Islands called Apex Capital. The collateral he put up?"
"The Vance Heritage Trust," I guessed.
"Exactly," Harrison said, spinning his laptop toward me. "The loan maturity date is this Friday at midnight. If he doesn't produce the fifty-million-dollar trust distribution, Apex Capital seizes his family’s primary real estate holdings, his Manhattan townhouse, and files criminal fraud charges for cross-collateralization. That’s why he sent armed goons into your hotel. He’s a cornered animal facing financial execution."
"What about the family court hearing?" I asked.
"Our digital forensic audit proved the signature on the ex-parte custody writ was a fabricated vector file generated from an old tax return," Harrison smiled grimly. "The administrative judge in Manhattan threw the writ out twenty minutes ago and issued a protective restraining order against Richard Vance pending a full plenary hearing. He is legally barred from coming within five hundred yards of Anna and the twins."
"That won't stop him," I said, looking out the panoramic library window toward the snow-dusted pine trees. "A man facing complete destruction doesn't respect restraining orders. He knows the clock is ticking."
"There's one more thing," Harrison added, his face darkening. "The internal breach at the hotel. David ran the digital audit logs on the service elevator. The credentials used to bypass security didn't belong to a rogue contractor."
I turned sharply. "Who did they belong to?"
May you like
"Marcus Vance," Harrison said quietly. "Richard's older brother. Who also happens to sit on the executive investment committee of your primary lending partner, Vanguard Global."
My blood ran cold. The rot went far deeper than a domestic squabble. Richard hadn't just attacked my hotel to grab his kids—his family was positioning a takeover strike against Martin Holdings itself.
