Chapter 6 - Turn the Tables

“What is Document D?” Madeline demanded, her voice cracking with hysterics. “Father, what did she find?”
“Document D,” Clara said, turning her merciless gaze toward Charles Whitmore, “is the off-ledger wire transfer from Whitmore Capital to Grant Sterling’s personal offshore trust in the British Virgin Islands. Exactly two point five million dollars, transferred the day after Nolan proposed to Madeline.”
The room went dead silent.
“Charles,” Nolan’s voice was lethal, “you didn't just try to steal my harbor project. You sold your own daughter’s engagement as part of a hostile takeover hedge.”
Madeline froze. She slowly turned her head toward her father. The illusion of her perfect, doting father shattered into a million pieces.
“Father?” Madeline whispered, horror dawning on her face. “You told me... you said we were doing this together to make the Whitmore family untouchable. You said Grant was going to make me CEO of the joint venture!”
Clara let out a soft, humorless laugh. “Madeline, you were the distraction. Charles and Grant set up the holding company so that once Nolan was bankrupted, Grant would dilute Whitmore Capital to zero. You weren't going to be a CEO. You were going to be left with nothing while Grant and Charles split the liquidation profits in Zurich.”
“You lying bitch!” Grant screamed, losing all composure. He lunged across the table toward Clara, his face twisted in savage rage. “You ruined everything!”
Before Grant’s hand could even cross the center line, Nolan moved with blinding speed.
Nolan’s left hand caught Grant by the throat, slamming him violently down onto the conference table. Crystal water carafes shattered, sending cold water and glass shards flying everywhere.
Grant choked, his feet kicking uselessly in the air, Nolan’s steel grip pinning him like a specimen to a board.
“Touch her,” Nolan growled in a demonic whisper, his face inches from Grant’s bulging eyes, “and they will never find your body in the Hudson River.”
“Nolan! Stop! Security!” Commissioner Thorne shouted, pressing the emergency panic button on the wall.
Nolan didn't blink. He maintained his chokehold for three agonizing seconds before shoving Grant backward. Grant crashed onto the floor, coughing violently, gasping for air, clutching his bruised neck.
Two armed Federal Marshals and the building security team burst into the room.
“Commissioner Thorne,” Nolan said smoothly, dusting off his lapel as if he had merely brushed away lint. “I request an immediate freeze on all Sterling Capital assets operating within the jurisdiction of the Port of New York. Additionally, I am filing formal criminal charges against Grant Sterling and Charles Whitmore for commercial bribery, corporate espionage, and interstate wire fraud.”
Commissioner Thorne looked at the certified documents, then at the sputtering Grant Sterling on the floor, and finally at Charles Whitmore, who had buried his face in his hands, weeping softly.
“Petition granted,” Thorne banged his gavel against the table. “The Harbor Six certification is awarded exclusively to Rourke Enterprises. Mr. Sterling, Mr. Whitmore... you will remain in this room until federal investigators arrive.”
Madeline fell to her knees beside the table. Her world had completely collapsed in less than twelve hours. The social status, the luxury, the billionaire fiancé, the handsome lover—all of it had turned to ash.
She crawled toward Nolan, tears streaming down her face, grasping at the cuff of his trousers.
“Nolan, please!” she sobbed uncontrollably. “I was manipulated! Grant lied to me! My father lied to me! You loved me, Nolan! We spent two years together! You can’t throw me away for her! Look at her, she’s nobody! I love you, Nolan!”
Nolan looked down at Madeline. There was no anger left in his eyes. Only absolute, freezing indifference.
“You never loved me, Madeline,” Nolan said quietly. “You loved the power of my last name. And you made the fatal mistake of underestimating the woman who kept your family afloat.”
He stepped backward, breaking her pathetic grasp.
Nolan walked over to Clara, who stood waiting by the window. In front of the weeping Madeline, the disgraced Grant, and the federal marshals, Nolan took Clara’s hand and raised it gently to his lips, kissing her knuckles.

“Let's go home, Clara,” Nolan whispered.
