Chapter 10 - The Phoenix Rises

Six weeks later, Paris was frozen under a blanket of crisp, crystalline winter light.
The Grand Palais had been transformed into a minimalist sanctuary of raw silk, brushed concrete, and falling snow. The global fashion elite—editors from Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, along with European royalty and venture capitalists—crowded the front row.
This wasn't Caruso Design Group.
This was the inaugural runway of *Vance Maison*.
Backstage, Nora adjusted the hem of the final piece in the collection: a breathtaking, reimagined bridal gown made of ivory raw silk, featuring the proprietary geometric weave that Dominic’s lawyers had spent six weeks failing to replicate. The seam ran bold, unhidden, and glorious from the shoulder to the hip—an architectural triumph of feminine strength.
Eli was sitting on a makeup trunk in the corner, happily playing a handheld video game while Teresa Caruso sat beside him, feeding him grapes.
"Five minutes, Nora," the backstage coordinator called out.
Nora looked in the mirror. The bruise on her cheek was gone, replaced by the natural glow of a woman who was sleeping eight hours a night and working eighteen hours on her own terms.
The music started—a slow, thunderous cello cadence that reverberated through the iron rafters of the Grand Palais.
The models walked. The applause began as a polite murmur and swelled into an uncontrollable standing ovation before the show was even halfway over.
In the back row of the auditorium, standing behind the international press corps, stood Dominic Caruso.
He had bought a general admission press pass through a fake name. He was wearing an unbranded trench coat, his hair longer than usual, his face haggard and hollowed out.
Caruso Design Group had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection three days ago after JPMorgan called in their loans. His luxury real estate was being liquidated. The Fifth Avenue penthouse was on the market.
He watched Nora walk out onto the runway for the final bow.
She wore a simple black velvet pantsuit, her head held high, radiant and untouched by the ruin she had left behind in Manhattan. The crowd was screaming her name. Billionaires were rising to their feet to applaud her.
Dominic’s heart shattered into a million jagged pieces.
He had owned the world, but he had traded the sun for a handful of dirt. He had struck the woman who created him, and in doing so, he had sealed his own damnation.
As Nora smiled at the flashing cameras, her eyes scanned the crowd. For a fraction of a second, her gaze caught Dominic’s in the dark shadows of the exit corridor.
She didn't look angry. She didn't look bitter.

She looked right through him, as if he were nothing more than a ghost of a man she used to know, and then she turned back to her son, who was running onto the stage to throw his arms around her waist.
