Chapter 11 - The Architect Behind the Curtain

My breath caught in my throat.

How could there be fresh ink inside a vault that had been sealed thirty years ago?

"Ethan?" Victoria called out from the doorway, noticing the sudden stiffness in my shoulders. "What is it? Did you find Clara’s personal letters?"

I didn't answer immediately. My heart was pounding against my ribs like a war drum.

I slid my finger beneath the red wax seal, breaking it open. Inside was a single folded letter, along with an encrypted black USB drive and an international bank receipt dated just three weeks ago.

I unfolded the letter.

The words on the page struck me harder than any insult Richard had ever thrown across the birthday table:

*Ethan,*

*If you are reading this, Richard is ruined, exactly as we designed. You played your part brilliantly at the gala. The rage, the righteous fury, the shredded deed—it played out like poetry. Richard was so focused on destroying you that he never realized he was walking into a trap set thirty years ago.*

*You think you reclaimed your mother’s empire out of justice.*

*You think Victoria Sterling came to your rescue out of sisterly devotion.*

*Look at the bank transfer attached to this letter. Look at the date Victoria opened the offshore receiver accounts in the Cayman Islands under your name. Richard was merely the scapegoat. The real empire was never meant for Clara, and it was never meant for you.*

*Look behind you, Ethan.*

A cold chill ran down my spine, freezing the marrow in my bones.

I slowly lowered the letter.

The sound of soft, slow, mocking applause echoed from the vault entrance.

I turned around.

Victoria Sterling stood in the doorway. She was no longer looking at me with the warm, protective gaze of a loving aunt. Her lips were curved into a sharp, victorious smile, and behind her stood two armed men in dark security uniforms, the pneumatic door controls already glowing red behind them.

"You really have your mother's eyes, Ethan," Victoria whispered, her voice smooth as venom. "So innocent. So utterly blind."
