Chapter 28 - Cold Harbor Reckoning

The storm that had chased Candace from the mountains of Maine had finally caught up with the New England coastline.
Forty-foot waves smashed against the granite sea wall of the Portland outer harbor, throwing sheets of icy brine into the freezing night air. Out on the pier, illuminated only by the sweeping beam of the harbor lighthouse, sat the private yacht *The Sovereign Mist*—a 140-foot vessel registered to a Panamanian holding company belonging to Julian Thorne.
Thorne had escaped federal custody three hours after the South Station incident.
A corrupt magistrate, compromised by maritime consortium payoffs a decade earlier, had granted immediate bail on a bogus diplomatic technicality. Before the U.S. Attorney’s emergency stay could be filed, Thorne had vanished into a diplomatic limousine, headed north toward the private docks where his vessel stood ready to slip into international waters beyond extradition treaties.
Inside the yacht’s wheelhouse, Thorne was screaming into a satellite phone.
"I don't care about the Boston accounts!" he roared, pacing the teak deck. "Transfer the offshore liquid reserves to the Dubai shell! Unmoor the lines now! We clear territorial waters in twenty minutes!"
"The lines won't clear, Mr. Thorne."
The voice came from the shadowed companionway leading up from the engine room.
Thorne spun around, dropping the phone.
Standing in the doorway was Sean Miller. He was drenched in sea spray, his wool coat soaked, an iron spanner resting casually in his right hand. Behind him, the yacht’s navigation consoles flickered and died as the secondary electrical breakers were thrown.
"Miller," Thorne breathed, backing toward the chart table where an emergency pistol was locked in a mahogany drawer. "How did you get aboard this vessel?"
"Your chief engineer was an apprentice on my father’s tugs forty years ago, Julian," Sean said, stepping into the dim red emergency lighting of the bridge. "You buy people with bearer bonds. Arthur Vance bought people with loyalty. You never could tell the difference."
Thorne lunged for the chart drawer, wrenching it open and pulling out a silver-plated Walther PPK.
He never got the chance to raise it.
Sean closed the distance with terrifying, explosive speed. The heavy iron spanner struck Thorne’s wrist with a sickening crack; the pistol clattered across the floorboards. Sean spun Thorne around, driving his face hard into the reinforced glass of the bridge window.
Outside, cutting through the roaring blizzard, the blazing blue strobes of two Coast Guard tactical cutters illuminated the thrashing harbor water, boxing the yacht against the granite breakwater.
"It’s over, Julian," Sean whispered into Thorne’s ear. "The Swiss accounts were frozen twenty minutes ago. Laurent handed the master encryption keys to the International Criminal Court. You aren't going to Dubai. You’re going to a maximum-security cage."
Thorne struggled, his nose bleeding against the glass, his eyes wild with terror as he watched the federal boarding teams scale the boarding ladder from the cutter.
"Arthur... Arthur was a coward!" Thorne spat, choking on his own blood. "He hid behind his daughter! He hid behind a baby!"
"No," Sean said calmly, pinning the billionaire with effortless strength. "Arthur was a father. He knew that one day, men like you would destroy yourselves trying to take what wasn't yours."
May you like
The bridge doors burst open, and tactical federal marshals flooded the room, their boots loud against the teak floor, their weapons trained on Thorne as Sean stepped back with his hands raised, his mission of twenty years finally complete.
