Chapter 5 - The True Cost of Debt

Nadine’s breath caught in her throat. She set the tumbler down on the armrest, her eyes fixed on the thick embossed paper inside the folder.
"What are you saying?"
"I’m saying Grant never owned your father’s life," Roman said, opening the portfolio. "He bluffed. He rushed the wedding because he knew my acquisition would finalize by noon today. If you had said 'I do,' your father’s assets would have merged into Sterling holdings automatically, making it impossible for me to seize them."
Nadine leaned forward, Roman's heavy overcoat sliding off her shoulder. Underneath, the sweetheart neckline of her dress showed the ivory curve of her skin. Roman’s gaze dipped for a fraction of a second, his dark pupils dilating, before returning to her eyes with absolute composure.
"You bought my father’s debt?" she asked, her voice dropping. "Then I just traded one warden for another."
"Look at the last page, Nadine."
She took the folder with trembling fingers. On the final page, beneath the transfer of thirty million dollars in commercial liabilities, was Roman Thorne’s signature. Beside it was a bold red stamp from the federal banking commission: *SATISFIED IN FULL.*
Nadine blinked. Once. Twice. "Satisfied? You... you cleared it?"
"Tore it up," Roman corrected simply. "Your father owes nobody. His warehouses in Brooklyn are free of liens. The shipping lines are operational. He is a free man."
"Why?" Nadine’s voice broke for the first time that day. The suffocating weight that had crushed her chest for six months—the endless sleepless nights, the starvation diets Grant forced on her so she would 'look presentable' on his arm, the utter humiliation she had agreed to endure—it had all vanished with a single stroke of ink. "Men like you don't give charity. What do you want from me?"
Roman turned slightly toward her. His massive presence filled the car, yet he didn't crowd her. There was no mockery in his posture, none of the patronizing disgust Grant always wore when he looked at her hips or her appetite.
"I don't give charity, Miss Ward. I invest," Roman said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register. "Three months ago, you negotiated the logistics contract for your father’s maritime fleet. You outplayed four of my best analysts and saved your family twelve million dollars. Grant took credit for it at the country club, but I saw the drafts. I saw the revisions in your handwriting."
Nadine froze.
"You are brilliant, Nadine," Roman said, his eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "You are fiercely loyal, you are unbreakable, and you are the most stunning woman who has ever walked into this city’s high society. Grant Sterling starved you of dignity because he was terrified you would realize you were out of his league."
A hot tear spilled down Nadine’s cheek. Not from sadness, but from the sudden, disarming shock of finally being *seen*.

"I don't want a trophy to hide in a penthouse," Roman continued, reaching out. His calloused thumb gently caught the tear on her cheek, his skin scorching hot against hers. "I want a partner. Someone who can stand beside me while this city burns. If you want to walk away right now, the driver will take you anywhere in the world. But if you stay... Grant Sterling will lose everything before the sun rises."
