Chapter 5 - The Champagne and the Sham

Ten miles away, in the plush master suite of the Vance estate, Harold Vance popped the cork off a vintage bottle of Dom Pérignon.

"To survival," Harold declared, pouring the pale, bubbling liquid into two crystal flutes. His hands were still trembling with adrenaline, his soaked clothes discarded into a pile in the bathroom. "To reclaiming what was stolen from us."

Evelyn sat at her vanity table, carefully dabbing cold cream over her face to soothe her rain-chilled skin. Her eyes, however, were fixed hungrily on the black leather briefcase sitting on the velvet chaise lounge.

"You were entirely too dramatic with that shovel, Harold," she said, though there wasn't a trace of genuine reprimand in her tone. "What if the neighbors called the police?"

"In that downpour? Nobody saw a damn thing," Harold scoffed, taking a long, triumphant swig from his glass. "Besides, she’s too terrified to go to the authorities. She knows if she makes a scandal, the whole town will find out how broke she really is. Now, bring me the crowbar from the utility closet. Let's get our securities."

Evelyn brought the flat metal pry-bar. Harold jammed it beneath the brass clasp of the locked briefcase. With a loud *SNAP*, the lock sheared off.

Harold grinned, tossing the tool aside. "Five hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars. Enough to pay off the bridge loan, cover the country club arrears, and keep the creditors off our backs for another year."

He threw the briefcase lid open.

Evelyn leaned in, her eyes gleaming.

The smile froze on Harold’s face.

Inside the case lay a thick stack of glossy, printed brochures titled: *Southwestern Municipal Water District: 2021 Annual Wastewater Report.* Beside it was a half-used box of paperclips, an expired calendar, and a neatly folded yellow legal pad.

Harold’s hands shook violently as he tore through the papers, throwing them across the hardwood floor. "Where is it?! Where are the trust certifications?! Where is the offshore bearer bond?!"

Evelyn’s face drained of all color, her manicured fingers clawing at the empty bottom of the briefcase. "Harold... what did you grab?"

"I grabbed the briefcase she was holding!" Harold screamed, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple. He grabbed the yellow legal pad from the bottom of the case.

Written on the first page, in bold black marker, was a single handwritten sentence:

*Did you really think I wouldn't see you coming?*

Harold let out a guttural, feral roar and hurled the briefcase against the wall, shattering an antique oil painting. "She played us! The little b***h played us!"

"The safe!" Evelyn shrieked, panic finally puncturing her icy demeanor. "Harold, go check the safe!"

Harold bolted down the stairs in his bare feet, skidding across the hallway runner and into his study. He dropped to his knees, shoved the rug aside, and stared down into the open, yawning cavity of the floor safe.

The forged hospital power of attorney was gone.

The altered trust documents were gone.

And worst of all—the black ledger detailing his secret debts, his fraudulent tax filings, and the illegal transfer of his late father’s estate assets was completely missing.

"She has the ledger," Harold whispered, his voice cracking into high-pitched terror. He stumbled backward against the desk, knocking over a bronze lamp. "Evelyn... she has the ledger."

Before Evelyn could reply, the distant, unmistakable wail of multiple police sirens shattered the quiet suburban night, growing louder and closer with every second.
