Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The audio recording software Marcus had rigged to Darren’s phone captured every single decibel of Layla’s confession.

We sat in silence in the car parked outside the Oasis Sports Bar as Marcus played the file back through his laptop speakers. Hearing my sister laugh over the confirmation of my supposed demise felt like having glass shards pushed through my chest, but the emotional pain quickly hardened into cold, strategic resolve.

"We have her," Marcus said, saving the audio file to three separate encrypted drives. "Conspiracy to commit murder, insurance fraud, forgery, and witness tampering. The local district attorney cannot bury this now, even with all of her corporate influence."

"She's still at the resort," I said, staring straight ahead through the windshield as the rain began to fall harder, drumming a frantic rhythm against the glass. "Surrounded by our parents, her colleagues, and two hundred witnesses who think she's the golden girl of Charleston society."

Marcus looked at me sideways. "What are you thinking, Lydia?"

"I'm thinking that a private arrest warrant served quietly in a police station isn't enough," I said, turning to face him. "She spent thirty-four years building an illusion of perfection, superiority, and untouchable grace. A quiet arrest gives her lawyers a chance to spin a narrative. She needs to fall where everyone can see the strings snap."

Marcus studied my expression for a long moment, a slow, appreciative nod forming on his lips. "The post-reception gala at the harbor pavilion. All of Ellery BioSystems' top executives are flying in for it tonight. If we crash the party, we don't just arrest a suspect—we dismantle an empire in real-time."

"Let's go shopping," I said.
