Chapter 10 - A Life Rewritten

Three weeks later, the world was quiet.

The bloody purge that followed the Winter Solstice Gala never made the front pages of the Chicago Tribune. To the public, Julian Moretti had simply stepped down from his corporate positions to "pursue philanthropic interests abroad," and Victor Falcone had suffered a sudden, fatal heart attack at his winter home in Miami.

The syndicate was unified, stronger and more terrifying than ever under Carmela Romano’s undisputed reign.

I sat in the sunroom of a gorgeous, sunlit townhouse in Lincoln Park. The deed sat on the coffee table in front of me, bearing my name.

Outside in the private courtyard, Toby was running around with a golden retriever puppy that Carmela had gifted him for his eleventh birthday. He wasn't limping. He wasn't coughing. His latest bone marrow biopsy had shown a seventy percent recovery rate—a medical miracle orchestrated by the country’s finest doctors, fully funded by the Romano Foundation for the rest of his life.

A light knock came at the open French doors.

Carmela walked in, wearing an elegant camel-hair coat, holding a leather portfolio. She looked completely healed, radiating the effortless power that commanded an empire.

"He looks happy," Carmela said, watching Toby toss a tennis ball to the bounding puppy.

"He's a different kid," I smiled, tears pricking my eyes. "I don't know how I'll ever repay you, Carmela. The house, his medical care, this entire new life... it's too much."

"Nonsense," Carmela sat across from me, crossing her legs. "You gave me back my empire, Riley. More than that, you reminded me that loyalty still exists in a world made of wolves. The townhouse is yours. Toby's trust fund is sealed. You will never have to work a midnight shift at a greasy diner again."

She set the leather portfolio on the table.

"However... I have a proposition for you."

I looked at the portfolio warily. "What kind of proposition?"

"I am grooming a new inner circle," Carmela said evenly. "People who have steel in their spines and fire in their blood. You have an extraordinary mind, Riley. You read people instantly. You don't flinch under pressure. I want to send you to the best business and law schools in the country, fully paid. And when you graduate, you will take a seat at my high table as my special advisor."

My heart skipped a beat. "You want me to join the syndicate?"

"I want you to be family," Carmela corrected gently. "Real family. Not by blood, but by choice. Think about it. There is no rush. You have your whole life ahead of you."

She stood up, kissed my forehead with maternal affection, and walked out toward the courtyard to play with Toby.

For the first time in my twenty-two years, I felt peace. The nightmare was over. The debt was paid. Toby was safe. We had won.

Or so I believed.
