Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

The blue notebook was found in the apartment where Anna and Lily had once lived.
Patricia Bell accompanied Marcus to the building. The apartment had been abandoned, its windows covered with dust, but the landlord allowed them inside after confirming the lease.
The rooms were nearly empty.
In the kitchen, Marcus noticed that one section of the floorboard had been replaced with a newer piece of wood. Beneath it lay a plastic envelope containing the notebook and a small memory card.
The notebook listed dates, amounts, and the names of several organizations.
At the back was a page headed:
WHAT AMELIA DISCOVERED
The notes suggested that money intended for emergency housing and food programs had been redirected through a network of companies controlled by people close to Richard Rochefort.
Anna had apparently worked as a junior accountant for one of those companies. She had discovered discrepancies and contacted Amelia, who was already investigating similar problems at the foundation.
Together, they had begun collecting evidence.
The notebook also contained a list of payments made to a security contractor in the weeks before Amelia's death.
One payment was dated three days before the accident.
Another had been made the morning after.
Marcus photographed every page and arranged for the notebook to be examined by the independent forensic team.
Damon read the findings late into the night.
The records were disturbing, but they did not prove that anyone had caused Amelia's death. He refused to let suspicion become a substitute for evidence.
Then the memory card revealed something more immediate.
A short audio recording featured Elisa's voice.
“She has to stop talking,” Elisa said.
A man replied, “Anna has a child. She won't disappear quietly.”
“Then make her understand what happens when people challenge my family.”
The recording ended.
There was no date, and the man's identity was unclear. The investigators would need to establish authenticity and context before it could be used as evidence.
But Damon knew the words could not be ignored.
He asked Rachel to speak with Lily only if she was comfortable.
The child sat with her knees tucked beneath a blanket.
“Lily, did your mother ever tell you why she was worried?”
“She said some people take things that don't belong to them.”
“Like toys?”
“Like money for children.”
Rachel exchanged a glance with Damon.
Lily continued.
“Mommy said the money was for beds and food. But the beds never came.”
“Did she tell you who took it?”
Lily nodded.
“The lady in red.”
Damon waited.
“She came to our house and said Mommy was going to ruin everything. Mommy told her to leave.”
Lily's fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Then the lady grabbed my arm. She said if Mommy didn't listen, she'd send me away where Mommy couldn't find me.”
Damon felt his hands curl into fists.
He forced them open.
“I'm sorry that happened to you.”
Lily looked at him.
“Did I do something bad?”
“No.”
“Then why did she hate me?”
Damon moved closer.
“Sometimes people behave cruelly because they want to control others. That isn't your fault.”
Lily studied him for a long moment.
“Are you going to send me away too?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
Damon hesitated before answering.
He could promise to protect her while the authorities investigated. He could not honestly promise that every part of her future would be easy.
“I promise I'll do everything I can to keep you safe, and I won't make important decisions about you without listening to you.”
Lily leaned against him.
It was the first time she had chosen to touch him.
That small gesture meant more to Damon than any business victory he had ever celebrated.
Later, Eleanor discovered a sealed letter inside the notebook. It was addressed to Damon and dated six years earlier.
Amelia had written it shortly before her death.
If the little girl reaches you, the people responsible may already know she exists. Don't trust anyone who tells you that protecting the family's reputation matters more than finding the truth.
Damon folded the letter carefully.
He had spent years believing his sister's death was a tragedy he could not change.
Now he understood that the truth might still be within reach.
But someone else had begun to realize it, too.
At midnight, the estate's security system reported an unauthorized attempt to access the guesthouse.

The person had used a valid security code.
A code belonging to someone on Damon's own staff.
