Chapter 10 - Promises Kept

"Emily," Luca said, his deep voice trembling slightly as he opened the box to reveal a breathtaking sapphire ring surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds—the exact shade of the blue frosting that had brought us together. "From the moment you stood between me and that humiliation in the kitchen, you showed me what loyalty, courage, and true grace look like. You gave me back my home. You gave me back my family. I don't want to spend another day on this earth without you by my side. Will you marry me?"
Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes. The girl who had scrubbed floors and worried about paying her mother's medical bills looked into the eyes of the man who ruled an empire, and saw only the little boy who had loved his mother’s blue-frosted cakes.
"Yes," I breathed, letting out a laugh through my tears. "Yes, Luca. A thousand times, yes."
He slipped the sapphire onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into his arms, kissing me with a fierce, passionate tenderness that made the world fade into nothingness. When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, we heard the sound of quiet clapping near the glass doors.
Mrs. Russo stood there, wiping away tears of joy with a lace handkerchief.
"Arthur is smiling tonight," she said softly, walking over to wrap us both in a warm, tight embrace. "He’s smiling because the Vance house is finally full of light again."
The three of us spent the rest of the night drinking spiced wine, laughing, and reminiscing about the journey that had brought us to this moment. It seemed as though every storm had passed, that every ghost had been laid to rest, and that peace had finally settled over the great estate forever.
The wedding was set for the following spring. Luca announced his engagement to the press the next morning, causing an international sensation. The headlines praised the union, hailing it as a modern fairy tale. Luca made me an equal partner in the Vance Charitable Foundation, and together, we launched initiatives supporting dockworkers' families and funding scholarships for underprivileged youth across the state.
