Chapter 4 - The Legal Escalation

By eight o'clock Monday morning, the legal machinery was in motion.

I sat in the corner glass office of Pendelton, Vance & Associates in downtown Los Angeles. Across the massive dark oak desk sat Arthur Pendelton—a seventy-two-year-old legal titan with silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and a reputation for dismantling complex corporate and high-net-worth matrimonial disputes with surgical precision.

On the table between us were three documents: the Pasadena property deed buyout, a temporary restraining order petition against Linda Thompson, and a petition for the summary annulment of my marriage to Daniel Thompson based on fraud and non-consummation.

"An annulment, Emily?" Arthur asked, hovering his fountain pen over the document. "You've only been married forty-eight hours. A standard divorce is clean, but an annulment requires specific statutory grounds in California."

"The grounds are misrepresentation of material intent, Arthur," I said calmly, sipping my black coffee. "Daniel represented himself as an independent, self-sufficient adult entering a joint marital partnership. Within twenty-four hours, he colluded—through silence—in a bad-faith financial extortion scheme orchestrated by a third party in his primary residence."

Arthur chuckled softly, a razor-sharp smile touching his lips. "A bit theatrical for family court, but given your financial structure, a judge will sign an annulment in ten minutes just to clear it off his docket. You brought no assets into the marriage under his name, correct?"

"Everything is held in my pre-existing revocable trusts," I replied. "The only joint asset was the Pasadena deposit—twenty-four hundred dollars, of which twelve hundred was mine. I've already wired his twelve hundred back to his personal checking account."

"Clean," Arthur noted, signing the petition. "Now, what about the mother-in-law? You mentioned a restraining order?"

"She sent sixteen text messages over the weekend," I said, sliding my phone across the desk. "Varying from emotional manipulation to direct threats regarding my business reputation. She threatened to go to the press, claiming I was an imposter who lured her son into a fake marriage."

Arthur’s eyes turned to ice as he skimmed the text transcripts.

"A press leak?" Arthur scoffed. "She wants to play media games with a woman who designs properties for Hollywood studio heads and Silicon Valley billionaires? She has no idea what kind of legal meat grinder she's walking into."

Arthur tapped an intercom button on his desk. "Sarah, get me Chief Inspector Miller at the LAPD Threat Management Unit. Tell him I have a civil harassment and attempted extortion filing involving a high-profile client."

He looked back at me. "We'll serve the annulment papers and the cease-and-desist harassment notice simultaneously today at two o'clock."

"Where?" I asked.

"Where will it hurt her the most?" Arthur asked with a cold smile.

I thought about Linda Thompson. I thought about her social climbing, her obsession with status, her weekly volunteer committee meetings at the Pasadena Women's Heritage Society—the exclusive, upper-crust club where she spent years pretending she belonged to old money.

"Two o'clock today is the Heritage Society’s monthly charity luncheon," I said smoothly. "She's the vice-chair of the fundraising committee."

Arthur's smile widened. "Consider it done, Emily."

I left Arthur’s office feeling a strange, weightless calm.

I didn't hate Daniel. I didn't even hate Linda. What I felt was the cold, unyielding clarity of an architect who had spotted a massive structural flaw in a building's foundation before the roof caved in. You don't negotiate with dry rot; you tear it out before it spreads to the rest of the structure.

At 1:45 PM, I was sitting in the rear of my chauffeur-driven Escalade parked across the street from the historic brick building of the Pasadena Women's Heritage Society.

Through the tinted glass, I saw the valet parking luxury European sedans. Women in tailored pastel dresses, pearl necklaces, and wide-brimmed hats were strolling up the marble steps, chatting animatedly.

Among them was Linda Thompson.

She was wearing a brand-new lavender silk dress—likely bought on credit—and smiling broadly as she greeted two wealthy society matrons at the top of the steps. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely assured of her social standing.

At 1:58 PM, a plain black sedan pulled up to the curb.

Two process servers in crisp dark suits stepped out, holding thick manila envelopes. They walked straight up the marble steps toward the entrance.

I lowered my window an inch to watch.

The process server approached Linda just as she was about to step through the heavy bronze doors surrounded by her fellow committee members.

"Linda Thompson?" the lead process server asked loudly.

Linda turned, a irritated smile on her face. "Yes? Can I help you? We're about to start a private—"

"You've been served," the man declared in a voice that carried clearly across the marble portico.

He handed her the thick envelope.

"These are court documents regarding an emergency civil harassment order, a cease-and-desist notice for attempted financial extortion, and a petition for marital annulment filed on behalf of Emily Carter."

The chatter on the marble steps instantly died.

The two society matrons beside Linda froze, their eyes widening in shock as they looked from the process server to the manila envelope in Linda's hands.

Linda’s face went from pale to ghostly white. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"Have a good day, ma'am," the process server added loudly before turning and walking back down the steps.

Linda stood on the portico of the most exclusive social club in Pasadena, holding court documents detailing her attempted extortion of her daughter-in-law, while twenty of the town's most prominent women stared at her in utter horror.

I raised my window.

"Take me back to Malibu, Marcus," I said softly.

The Escalade pulled smoothly away from the curb, leaving the chaotic scene on the marble steps far behind.
