Chapter 4 - The Admiral's Pale Face

Brock puffed his chest out, completely misreading the room.

"Sir, she showed blatant disrespect on the live line," Brock stated proudly. "I administered field discipline to preserve unit cohesion before the parade concluded. She refused to surrender classified exercise manifests."

"Field discipline..." Vance whispered.

A cold breeze rolled off the Pacific, snapping the halyards against the flagpoles with metallic clinks. The sun was rising higher, casting harsh shadows across the parade deck.

"Admiral," I spoke, taking two measured steps up the stairs. "Delivery as scheduled. 0900 hours local."

I extended the folder.

Admiral Vance hurried down the wooden stairs so fast he nearly tripped on the third riser. He didn't wait for his aides. He rushed past Commander Sullivan, completely ignoring the SEAL's extended hand, and stopped three inches in front of me.

Vance stood at rigid attention.

His right hand snapped up into the crispest, sharpest salute seen on that base in forty years.

"Ma'am," Admiral Vance said, his voice shaking.

Silence slammed into the courtyard like a hammer.

Brock Sullivan’s jaw went slack. The salute he had maintained dropped a fraction of an inch, his elbow wavering. "Sir? Admiral, she's an Army Captain. O-3. She salutes you."

Vance didn't lower his hand. "Shut your mouth, Commander. Shut your damn mouth right now."

I did not return the salute immediately. I let the silence hang. I let every one of those 1,040 soldiers, sailors, and operators watch the two-star Admiral standing with his hand pinned to his brow in front of a woman with a bloody lip.

"At ease, Admiral," I said softly.

Vance lowered his hand, his eyes dropping to the cut on my lip. His jaw clenched with fury, but not at me.

"Is that... did he...?" Vance couldn't even finish the sentence.

"Commander Sullivan believed he was exercising his prerogative as an O-5," I said, handing the manila envelope to the Admiral. "He was under the impression that rank is determined solely by the brass on one's collar."

Brock stepped forward, his face flushed with confusion and mounting rage. "Admiral Vance, with all due respect, what the hell is going on here? Who is this woman?"

Admiral Vance turned on Brock with a savagery that made the combat-hardened SEAL physically take half a step backward.

"You arrogant, blind fool," Vance hissed through clenched teeth. "Do you have any idea whose blood is on your knuckles?"
