Chapter 5 - The Secret Patent

The next morning, the sun broke over our twelve-acre farm, illuminating the green pastures, the wooden barn, and the large stone house Samuel and I had built together.

While the girls were out in the garden with Samuel feeding our two golden retrievers, my private attorney, Victoria Vance (who was also Samuel's elder sister), arrived at the house carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Victoria was one of the sharpest corporate litigation lawyers in the Southeast—a woman who had spent fifteen years dismantling corrupt corporate trusts.

"Eleanor Whitcomb’s legal team filed an emergency motion in the Mecklenburg County Family Court at eight AM this morning," Victoria reported, setting her tablet on the kitchen island. "They are demanding mandatory DNA testing and immediate temporary visitation rights for Nathaniel."

I poured Victoria a cup of coffee. "Can they enforce it?"

"Biologically? A judge will likely order a paternity test eventually," Victoria explained. "However, Eleanor made a massive legal blunder five years ago that she completely forgot about."

I leaned against the counter. "What blunder?"

Victoria pulled a yellowed document from her briefcase—the original 2021 Whitcomb Divorce Settlement Agreement.

"Paragraph 14, Clause C," Victoria pointed out, her lips curling into a sharp smile. "Eleanor was so terrified that you might try to claim future spousal support or company stock that she inserted a absolute, irrevocable Severance and Waiver Clause."

She read the text aloud:

'The Husband and the Husband’s estate hereby relinquish any and all future parental, custodial, financial, and legal claims to any offspring, issue, or dependents resulting from the marriage, waiving all paternal rights in exchange for the total forfeiture of spousal asset division.'

I stared at Victoria in shock. "She put that in writing?"

"She put it in writing because five years ago, she assumed you were lying when you said you were sick," Victoria laughed softly. "She thought you were going to fake a pregnancy to extort them! She drafted a clause meant to lock you out completely, and in doing so, she legally terminated Nathaniel's parental rights before the girls were even born!"

Just then, my laptop on the counter chimed with an incoming video call.

It was Arthur Sterling—the chief legal counsel for the Whitcomb Investment Group in Boston.

I clicked 'Accept.'

Arthur Sterling’s face appeared on the screen. He looked pale, exhausted, and deeply panicked.

"Emily," Arthur stammered, adjusting his glasses. "I... I just spent two hours on the phone with Eleanor and Nathaniel. They are demanding I pursue full custody of the triplets."

"Hello, Arthur," I said calmly. "I assume Victoria’s firm forwarded you Paragraph 14 of the 2021 settlement?"

Arthur wiped sweat from his forehead. "Yes. I’ve read it. And... legally speaking, Eleanor signed away Nathaniel's rights entirely. But Emily... that’s not why I’m calling."

Arthur leaned closer to his web camera, dropping his voice into a hushed whisper.

"There is something else in the Whitcomb family trust archives that you need to know," Arthur revealed. "Something Eleanor has been hiding from Nathaniel and the entire board for twenty-five years."
