Chapter 7 - The Power Move

On the morning of December 29th—Day Four—I authorized Evelyn to freeze the joint account.

Within forty minutes, my phone rang. Mark’s name flashed across the dashboard of the wheelchair console. I pressed the speaker button.

"Claire! What the hell is going on with the debit card?" Mark’s voice was high-pitched, frantic. "I’m standing at the paint store right now with Cynthia’s interior designer, and the card was declined! The teller said the account is frozen!"

"I froze it, Mark," I said calmly.

"You what?!" he roared. "Unfreeze it right now! Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is? I’m standing here with clients and Cynthia!"

"Cynthia isn't your client, Mark. She’s your ex-wife. And that account was funded by my personal checking account. You don't have the authority to pull five thousand dollars for paint."

"It’s my house too!" he screamed through the speaker, his voice cracking with indignant fury. "I live here! My family is here! You don't get to run away like a spoiled child, hide in some hotel, and cut off my money!"

"I’m not in a hotel, Mark. I had reconstructive surgery because your daughter broke my leg."

A brief pause hung on the line. Then Mark scoffed, doubling down on his delusion. "Oh, stop being dramatic. Dr. Alvarez probably told you what you wanted to hear so he could bill insurance. Jenna didn't push you. She told me the truth—you tripped on your own feet because you were shaking with jealousy. Now unfreeze the account, or I swear to God, I’m changing the locks on the front door."

A slow, bitter laugh escaped my throat. "You’re going to change the locks?"

"Yes! If you’re going to act like a hostile lunatic, you don't belong here. Cynthia and I are hosting an end-of-the-year dinner party tomorrow night. The whole family is coming—Brenda, Mom, Jenna’s friends, Cynthia’s business partners. If you want to show up, you can apologize to everyone for your behavior on Christmas. Otherwise, stay wherever the hell you are."

He hung up.

I looked across the private room at Evelyn, who had been listening to every word while taking notes.

"Did you get the audio recording?" I asked.

"Every syllable," Evelyn confirmed. "He just threatened an illegal lockout of the deed holder on a recorded line, admitted to converting your separate property for personal use, and demonstrated full awareness of the domestic incident."

"Tomorrow is December 30th," I said, leaning back against the pillows, my hand resting gently on my cold, immobilized knee. "Day Five."

"Everything is filed," Evelyn said, sliding a heavy document across the table. It bore the gold embossed seal of the County Superior Court. "Judge Harrison signed the emergency writ of possession and the temporary restraining order at two o'clock today. We have two uniformed deputies assigned to execute the order tomorrow afternoon at five."

"Make it six," I instructed quietly. "He said the dinner party starts at six. I want everyone there. I want Cynthia there. I want his mother to see exactly what her son built his pride upon."
