Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the DeSoto Hotel was a sea of black tuxedos, emerald satin, and diamond-encrusted collars.

Richard Vance stood at the center of the raised dais, a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon raised in his right hand. Beside him stood Evan Harrington, looking every bit the dutiful son-in-law-to-be, his arm wrapped possessively around Taryn's waist.

Taryn had already pivoted the narrative. She wore a modest, high-necked blush gown, her eyes glistening under the chandeliers as she played the role of the devoted sister soldiering through family tragedy.

"To unity," Richard announced into the microphone, his booming baritone commanding the silence of four hundred elite guests and three television news crews. "In times of domestic trial, our families do not fracture. We consolidate. We endure. Tonight, as Harrington Enterprises and Vance Holdings finalize our historic merger, we also dedicate this evening to my daughter Audrey, who is recovering peacefully under private care—"

*Bzzt.*

The massive presentation screen behind the dais, meant to display the corporate merger logos and stock projections, suddenly flickered.

A sharp burst of digital feedback squealed through the surround-sound audio system, causing the guests to wince and murmur.

Richard frowned, turning toward the AV technician stationed at the back of the room. "Check the HDMI link," he muttered away from the microphone.

Instead of the corporate slideshow, the screen flared with crystal-clear, uncompressed 4K video.

The audio boomed through the ballroom’s million-dollar speakers:

*"Make sure you catch the height difference... When she reaches for the rail, I'll give her the shove... Five million views minimum before midnight."*

The collective gasp from four hundred people sounded like a vacuum tearing through the room.

Taryn’s face went pasty white, the champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering against the hardwood platform with a sharp, crystalline explosion.

On the eighty-foot screen, the footage played in slow motion: Taryn’s cold, calculated shove; the sickening arc of my body through the air; the heavy, hollow thud of my back striking the marble floor; and Taryn’s cruel, instantaneous laughter before she remembered to scream.

"Shut it off!" Richard roared, lunging toward the stage controls. "Shut that goddamned screen off right now!"

The screen didn't shut off.

Instead, it split into three windows. The second window showed the forensic bank audit displaying Richard's wire transfer to Vanguard PR from my emptied savings account. The third window showed Eleanor's forged signature on the hospital waiver, stamped with a red "FRAUDULENT EXECUTION" banner from the Georgia State Bureau of Investigation.

The main doors of the ballroom swung open.

The room went completely, terrifyingly silent.

Rolling through the double doors in an electric wheelchair, accompanied by Victoria Sterling and four uniformed detectives from the Savannah Police Department, was me.
