Chapter 9 - The Itemized Bill

By Tuesday morning, Honolulu was bathed in brilliant, cloudless sunlight.
I spent the morning learning how to paddleboard in the calm waters of Kahala Beach. My instructor, an elderly Hawaiian man named Keanu with silver hair and hands like weathered teak, told me I had great balance.
"You carry a lot of tension in your shoulders, sister," he noted as we paddled back toward the shore. "You gotta drop the rocks you're carrying. The ocean doesn't like heavy people."
"I dropped a pretty big rock two days ago," I said with a genuine laugh.
"Good," Keanu grinned. "Leave it on the reef. The fish will eat it."
After a lunch of fresh ahi poke and Kona coffee, I returned to my suite. I opened my personal laptop and checked the inbox of a secondary email address that my family had access to.
There was an email from Richard, sent at 4:30 AM California time.
The subject line was: **UNACCEPTABLE CRUELTY — READ IMMEDIATELY.**
I clicked it open.
*Rose,*
*What you have done is not only unchristian, it is illegal. You left your family stranded in an airport. You caused your sister to suffer a nervous breakdown that has ruined her personal life and relationship. You turned off the electricity in our home like a common slumlord.*
*I have spoken to an attorney. You cannot evict your own parents from their home. Furthermore, you owe this family for thirty years of room, board, love, and emotional investment. I am giving you one final chance to rectify this before I file a civil lawsuit for emotional distress, elder abuse, and abandonment.*
*Here are our non-negotiable terms:*
*1. Wire $25,000 to my account by 5:00 PM today to cover emergency expenses, legal retainers, and Jessica’s medical care.*
*2. Restore all utility services immediately.*
*3. Transfer the deed of the Coto de Caza home into my name.*
*4. Issue a formal public apology on your social media clearing Jessica’s name so she can repair her reputation.*
*Do this, and we may consider forgiving you.*
*Fail to do this, and you will see us in court.*
*Your Father,*
*Richard Miller.*
I read through the email twice. I didn't get angry. I didn't cry.
Instead, I felt a deep, profound sense of pity for the sheer delusion of this man. He still thought he held the cards. He still thought he was the master of the house, demanding tribute from a peasant.
I clicked *Reply.*
I didn't write an essay. I didn't justify myself.
Instead, I opened a folder on my desktop labeled **Miller_Finances_Master**. Over the last seven years, my accountant and I had meticulously tracked every single dollar transferred to, spent on, or invested in my family, complete with bank receipts, cancelled checks, and tax documents.
I drafted a single response:
*Richard,*
*Please see the attached spreadsheet.*
*Over the past seven years, I have provided the following financial support:*
*- Mortgage payments (Coto de Caza): $384,000.00*
*- Property taxes and insurance: $68,400.00*
*- Jessica’s culinary school tuition (dropped out after 6 weeks): $18,500.00*
*- Jessica’s personal credit card settlements: $42,300.00*
*- Richard’s contracting business bailout (2021): $85,000.00*
*- European luxury car leases (3 vehicles): $76,200.00*
*- Medical/dental bills (Eleanor & Richard): $29,100.00*
*- Family vacations (fully funded by Rose): $64,000.00*
*TOTAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT PROVIDED: $767,500.00.*
*The house in Coto de Caza was purchased by RMM Holdings LLC at a foreclosure auction using 100% of my private capital. You and Eleanor have lived there under a zero-dollar lease agreement that expired fourteen months ago. You are legally classified as month-to-month holdover tenants.*
*If you file a lawsuit, my legal team will immediately countersue for the recovery of all fraudulent expenses, breach of contract regarding the business bailout loan of $85,000 (which you signed a promissory note for), and criminal battery charges against Jessica for the assault at LAX, for which we have four high-definition video recordings from independent witnesses.*
*You have until December 15 to pack your personal belongings and vacate the premises.*
*Do not contact me again. All future communications must go through Marcus Vance, Esq.*
*Rose Miller.*
I attached the 40-page PDF document, clicked *Send*, and closed the laptop.

Then, I picked up my beach towel, put on my sunglasses, and headed down to the pool.
