Chapter 7 - The Settlement Offer

Two days later, my mother called Arthur Vance’s office, begging for an emergency settlement meeting.

Arthur agreed to hold the meeting in his law office conference room on Friday afternoon, under the strict condition that I would sit behind bulletproof security glass in an adjoining observation room, completely protected from any physical or verbal contact.

At 3:00 p.m., my mother arrived, looking ten years older, her shoulders slouched, her hands clutching a worn leather handbag. Sitting beside her was Vanessa, looking thin, hollow-eyed, and terrified, accompanied by a public defender she had been forced to hire.

Arthur Vance sat at the head of the conference table, his arms crossed, a legal notepad resting before him.

"Mr. Vance," Vanessa’s attorney began nervously. "My client is prepared to offer a full public retraction of the email sent to Regional Healthcare. She will sign a binding non-disparagement agreement and accept a permanent injunction barring her from coming within one thousand feet of Ms. Maya Cole or Gather and Grain."

"That is the bare minimum required by law," Arthur replied coldly. "What about the half-million-dollar civil claim for tortious interference?"

My mother burst into tears, dropping to her knees beside the conference table.

"Mr. Vance, please!" Mom sobbed, wringing her hands toward Arthur. "We don't have half a million dollars! I took out a second mortgage on my house last week just to pay Vanessa’s preliminary legal fees! If you pursue this, we will lose the house! We will be homeless!"

Vanessa sat paralyzed, staring at the polished table, her voice trembling as she spoke for the first time in weeks. "I... I will apologize to Maya. I will write a letter. I'll do whatever she wants. Just please... don't send the financial records to the State Attorney."

Arthur leaned back, glancing toward the one-way mirror where I was sitting in the shadows.

He pressed a button on his intercom speaker. "Maya. You’ve heard the offer. What are your instructions?"

In the observation room, I pressed my microphone button. My voice echoed softly through the conference room speakers:

"Vanessa."

Vanessa jumped at the sound of my voice, looking around the room in terror.

"You spent thirty-eight years taking everything you wanted from this family," I said, my tone flat, emotionless, and razor-sharp. "You took my savings when I was eighteen. You took my confidence when I was twenty-five. You took my peace when I built Gather and Grain. And three weeks ago, you tried to take my livelihood and broke my face."

"Maya... please..." Vanessa whimpered, tears spilling over her mascara.

"I will drop the financial civil damages," I declared. "On three non-negotiable conditions."
