Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Shadow

Monday evening was suffocating.
I sat at my kitchen table, reviewing every single transaction from 2022 to the present. My right arm was immobilized in a black medical sling, but my fingers never stopped typing notes on my tablet. Daniel prepared dinner, but neither of us touched our plates.
At 7:00 PM, my father called again.
“Emily. I’m at the club with Vanessa and two of the directors. I wanted to verify that you’ll have the trust release certificates signed before tomorrow morning.”
“I’ll have all necessary documents ready, Dad,” I replied.
“You sound strange,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into that familiar, dismissive patronization. “I hope you aren't going to drag your personal feelings into tomorrow. Vanessa mentioned that you seemed resentful about her appointment.”
“Did she?”
“She did. And I understand it, Emily. Truly, I do. You’ve always been... methodical. Safe. You do fine work with numbers, but you don't possess the predatory drive needed to lead a multi-million-dollar land enterprise. Vanessa has my blood in her veins. She has the vision. When I pass the gavel to her tomorrow, it’s because she earned it.”
*She earned it by stealing thirty-four million dollars from you,* I thought.
“I know what she possesses, Dad,” I said evenly.
“Good. Be there at nine-forty-five. Wear navy or dark gray. The photographers will want a unified family portrait before the board vote.”
He hung up.
I set the phone down and turned to Daniel. “He really believes it. Even if I told him right now, he would call me a liar.”
“That’s why you don't tell him,” Daniel said, sitting beside me and taking my left hand in his. “You let the trap spring. You’ve spent your whole life protecting people who wouldn't cross the street to pull you out of the rain, Em. Tomorrow, you protect yourself.”
“I’m protecting him too,” I whispered. “Even if he hates me for it.”
At 9:00 PM, Marcus texted me:
*Arrest warrants signed by Federal Magistrate Henderson under seal. Two plainclothes agents will be in the lobby at 9:30 AM. Martin has notified the building security to allow federal entry to the 14th floor at 10:15 AM sharp. Get ready.*
I closed my laptop.
I walked into the bathroom, looked at myself in the mirror, and removed the white medical sling. The pain was still sharp, but the swelling had gone down slightly. I put on a tailored black blazer, carefully easing my injured arm through the sleeve. I buttoned the jacket, concealing the posture of my guarded shoulder.
I didn't look like a victim anymore.
May you like
I looked like an auditor arriving to collect an unpaid balance.
