Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece

One year later.

The private garden estate in Lake Forest had never looked more beautiful. The old, cold wrought-iron fences had been replaced by blooming hydrangeas, climbing white roses, and rolling emerald lawns designed by Bennett Design Studio.

The sun was warm and golden, casting long, peaceful shadows across the terrace where thirty close friends and family members were gathered.

Laughter and soft jazz floated on the summer breeze.

Elena sat at a garden table, dressed in a floral silk dress, laughing as Maya Collins explained a complicated court victory. Nearby, Isabella sat quietly in a cushioned wicker chair. She was thinner now, humbler, having spent a year in reflection in Galena. She held a small, silver rattle, watching with soft, wistful eyes as her granddaughter giggled on a blanket across the lawn.

In the center of the grass, Luke Morgan was lying flat on his back, completely unbothered by the grass stains on his tailored white linen shirt.

Sitting on his chest was a ten-month-old baby girl with chubby cheeks, a wild mop of dark curls, and her mother’s brilliant hazel eyes. Her name was Clara.

Clara was currently babbling incoherently while gleefully slamming a plastic toy block directly onto her father’s chin.

“Oh, that’s a direct hit,” Luke grunted with a booming laugh, his massive hands holding Clara securely around her waist. “You’re ruthless, Clara Morgan. Just like your mother.”

Clara squealed with delight, blowing a raspberry that left drool on his cheek. Luke didn't flinch; he simply leaned up and kissed her plump cheek with a tenderness that would have shocked every business titan in North America.

Sophia walked out onto the terrace, wearing a sleeveless white eyelet summer dress that fluttered in the breeze. Her hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, her smile bright and radiant. In her hand, she carried a glass of iced tea and Clara’s favorite plush rabbit.

Luke looked up.

The moment his eyes found Sophia, the world around him melted away, exactly as it had every single day since she had let him back into her life. He sat up, swinging Clara effortlessly into the crook of his arm, and stood to meet her.

“Is she terrorizing you?” Sophia asked, laughing as she wiped Luke’s cheek with a cloth napkin.

“She’s a genius,” Luke said proudly, wrapping his free arm around Sophia’s waist and pulling her flush against his side. “She just calculated the exact trajectory to knock out my jaw.”

Sophia rested her head against his shoulder, inhaling the scent of sandalwood, clean sunshine, and baby powder that now defined him. “You spoil her, Luke.”

“I spoil both of my girls,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to her temple. “It’s my full-time job.”

And it was. While Bennett Design Studio had grown into an international architecture empire—with Sophia’s name etched into the skylines of three major cities—Luke had structured his businesses into self-sustaining trusts. He ran his logistics and real estate ventures with absolute integrity, donating millions to community clinics and maternal health programs led by Elena.

He had conquered Chicago twice: once with an iron fist, and once with an open, loving heart.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in strokes of violet, amber, and gold, David took Clara to play with Elena by the rose garden.

Luke and Sophia stood alone at the edge of the stone balustrade, looking out over the water.

Luke reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

Sophia’s breath caught.

He opened it. Inside rested a delicate, platinum band, simple, elegant, and timeless, embedded with a single, internally flawless emerald—the exact stone she had chosen for her first restoration project years ago.

Luke turned to face her, taking her left hand into his.

“I know we tore up the old contract,” Luke said, his voice deep, steady, and rich with a love that had survived the fire. “And I know you never needed my name, my money, or my protection to be the extraordinary woman you are.”

He sank down onto one knee on the smooth flagstones, looking up at her with clear, devoted eyes.

“Sophia Bennett... will you marry me again? Not as a transaction. Not to fulfill an expectation. But as my partner, my equal, my architect, and the only love of my life?”

Sophia looked down at the man who had laid his entire world at her feet, who had fought his way through his own darkness just to stand beside her in the light.

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled her eyes.

She leaned down, cupping his face in both hands, and pulled him up into a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of sweet tea, summer rain, and a future built to last forever.

“Yes,” she whispered against his lips, smiling as Clara’s laughter echoed across the lawn. “A thousand times, yes.”
