Chapter 10 - The Public Confession

Three days later, the scandal went national.

The Massachusetts Attorney General formally announced a comprehensive criminal investigation into Margaret and Richard Stone for grand larceny, wire fraud, and charitable embezzlement. Major donors who had given millions over the decades were demanding full audits, and the board of the Boston Children’s Hospital publicly severed all ties with the Stone family.

Desperate to salvage what was left of her social standing, Margaret called an emergency press conference on the steps of the Boston Public Library. She had hired a crisis management firm, intending to paint herself as an overwhelmed mother who had made "accounting oversights" while trying to balance charitable giving with family obligations.

Daniel and I stood across the street, watching the circus. Mom stood at the podium in a somber black suit, looking frail and tearful, speaking into a cluster of thirty microphones.

"My family has been subjected to a malicious smear campaign," Mom announced, dabbing at her eyes with a lace handkerchief. "Every dollar donated to the Stone Family Foundation was used with pure intentions. My daughter Emma was misled by bad actors seeking to tear down a philanthropic legacy—"

"That is a lie, Margaret," a booming voice resonated across the plaza.

The reporters turned their cameras in unison.

Grandpa Arthur was walking up the granite steps, flanked by the lead prosecutor from the Attorney General’s Special Investigations Unit and two uniformed police officers.

Mom froze, her hand hovering in mid-air. "Arthur... what are you doing?"

The prosecutor stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone. "Margaret Stone, Richard Stone. As of ten minutes ago, a grand jury has returned a sixteen-count indictment against both of you for enterprise corruption, securities fraud, and aggravated theft."

The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm of light.

Mom looked frantically into the sea of cameras, realizing there was no script, no PR spin, and no donation that could save her now. When the police officer stepped forward with a pair of handcuffs, Richard simply bowed his head, extending his wrists without a word.

Mom, however, lost her mind. "Do you know who I am?" she screamed as the cuffs clicked shut around her wrists. "I am Margaret Cabot Stone! You cannot arrest me! Emma! Emma, tell them! Look at what you’ve done to me!"

Across the street, I held Daniel’s hand tightly. I didn't smile, and I didn't look away. I watched the woman who had spent my entire life making me feel small, worthless, and invisible be led into the back of a police cruiser in broad daylight.

The regret wasn't mine anymore. It was entirely hers.
