Chapter 6 - THE GIRL CALLED OLIVIA

Margaret refused to answer Ethan's calls.

She also refused to open her apartment door.

Ethan could have sent lawyers, obtained subpoenas, and made her life unbearable through the machinery of his wealth.

Instead, he went to her building with Lily and Noah.

He wanted his son to see that difficult conversations did not always end in anger.

Margaret finally opened the door when she heard Noah's voice.

"Great-Aunt Margaret?"

Her expression collapsed.

Noah stood in the hallway holding a drawing.

"I made you something."

Margaret stared at him.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

Then she stepped aside.

The apartment smelled of old books and lavender. Photographs covered the walls, including several of Eleanor and Ethan as a child.

Noah placed his drawing on the coffee table.

It showed four people standing beneath a yellow sun.

Ethan.

Lily.

Noah.

Emma.

This time, the man was holding both children's hands.

Margaret sat down.

"I don't deserve your kindness," she whispered.

Noah shrugged.

"Mom says people should have a chance to tell the truth."

Lily looked away.

Margaret began to cry.

She admitted that Eleanor had asked her to supervise Emma's placement with a carefully selected foster family. Margaret had been told that the arrangement would be temporary, lasting only until the legal dispute involving Richard was resolved.

But the months became years.

Eleanor insisted that revealing Emma's identity would expose the family to financial ruin. Richard threatened to take legal action if Margaret interfered.

Eventually, Margaret stopped asking questions.

"Where is she?" Ethan demanded.

Margaret handed him a file.

Olivia Reed had been adopted by Daniel and Sarah Reed, a couple who lived in a quiet town outside Boston. They had been told that Olivia was an orphan whose biological relatives were unable to care for her.

They had never been told that she had a twin brother.

They had never been told that her parents were alive.

Ethan read their address.

"We're going there."

Margaret reached for his hand.

"Please don't frighten her. She's had a good life. The Reeds love her."

Ethan looked at the woman who had helped erase his daughter from his world.

"I don't intend to take her away from the people who raised her. I intend to tell her the truth."

The following morning, Ethan and Lily drove to Massachusetts.

Noah stayed with Ethan's trusted assistant, who had arranged a quiet day of activities with him. Ethan wanted the first meeting with Olivia to be calm and private.

The Reed home was modest, with a white porch and flower boxes beneath the windows.

Sarah Reed answered the door.

She looked from Ethan to Lily and immediately understood that something serious had happened.

"Can I help you?"

Ethan took a breath.

"My name is Ethan Caldwell. This is Lily Bennett. We believe your daughter may be our biological child."

Sarah went pale.

Daniel Reed appeared behind her.

"That's impossible."

Ethan handed them the hospital records.

The couple read the documents in silence.

Sarah sat down on the porch steps.

"We were told she had no living relatives."

"I understand," Lily said gently. "You were lied to as well."

Sarah began to cry.

"We've raised her since she was a baby. She's our daughter."

"We're not here to erase that," Ethan replied. "We don't want to take her away from you. We want her to know the truth when she's ready."

A small voice came from inside.

"Mom?"

A girl appeared in the hallway.

She was wearing jeans and a blue sweatshirt, with a book tucked beneath one arm.

When she saw the strangers, she stopped.

Sarah stood quickly.

"Olivia, sweetheart, these people have something important to tell us."

Olivia looked at Ethan.

"Have I met you before?"

Ethan's eyes filled.

"No."

"Then why are you looking at me like that?"

He crouched to her level.

"Because I think I've been missing you for a very long time."

Olivia frowned.

Lily knelt beside him.

"We believe we're your birth parents."

The girl stared at them.

Then she laughed nervously.

"That's not funny."

"No," Lily whispered. "It isn't."

Olivia backed away.

"You're wrong."

Daniel moved beside her.

"Olivia, nobody is going to make you do anything."

Ethan nodded.

"You don't have to believe us today. You don't even have to like us. We just wanted you to know that we're here."

Olivia looked between them.

"Do I have a brother?"

Ethan smiled through his tears.

"Yes. His name is Noah."

"Is he like me?"

"Very much."

"Does he know about me?"

"Yes."

Olivia turned toward Sarah.

"Can I think about this?"

Sarah hugged her.

"Of course, sweetheart."

Before Ethan and Lily left, Olivia asked one final question.

"Why did you give me away?"

Lily's face crumpled.

"We didn't, sweetheart. Someone took you from us."

Olivia stared at her.

"Who?"

Ethan looked toward the road.

"Someone who will have to answer for what he did."

As they drove away, Ethan's phone rang.

Daniel Price was calling from New York.

"The board has received a petition to remove you as chief executive," he said. "Richard claims you're emotionally unstable and using company resources to pursue a personal obsession."

Ethan gripped the steering wheel.

"Who signed it?"

"Seven directors."

"And the evidence?"

Daniel paused.

"Richard has submitted a document claiming that Noah and Olivia are not your biological children."

Ethan looked at Lily.

The battle for his family had just become a battle for his company.

And Richard Caldwell intended to win both.
