Chapter 5 - The Corporate Ambush

Armed with Clara’s revelations and Nora’s legal contacts, I secured an appointment with Diane Vance, a formidable family law attorney whose reputation for dismantling toxic spouses was legendary in the city. The meeting was set for two in the afternoon.
At noon, I decided to go to my office to collect my personal belongings, secure my work laptop, and inform HR that I would be taking emergency leave. I left Lily in Nora’s capable hands, knowing Nora would guard her with her life.
When I stepped into the bright, glass-paneled lobby of the architectural firm where I worked as a senior project manager, the receptionist looked up with a panicked expression.
“Rachel! Oh, thank God you’re here,” she whispered, leaning over the counter. “Your mother-in-law is in the third-floor conference room. She arrived an hour ago and asked to speak directly to Mr. Harrison, your division director.”
My blood ran cold, followed immediately by white-hot fury. Gloria wasn't just trying to bully me into silence; she was trying to destroy my livelihood to leave me with no financial options.
I didn't run. I straightened my blazer, held my head high, and walked directly toward the third-floor executive suites. As I pushed open the double doors of the boardroom, I saw Gloria sitting at the head of the conference table, dabbing her dry eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief. Across from her sat David Harrison, my boss, looking thoroughly uncomfortable.
“—and as you can imagine, Mr. Harrison, we are deeply concerned about Rachel’s mental stability,” Gloria was saying in a mournful, theatrical voice. “She had a violent breakdown at a family gathering yesterday, screamed at her husband, and ran away with their baby. We only want what’s best for her, but we felt her employer should be aware that her erratic behavior might affect company clients—”
“Gloria,” I said clearly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind me with a decisive click.
Gloria froze, her handkerchief dropping an inch. David Harrison looked up, visible relief washing over his face.
“Rachel,” David said, standing up. “Mrs. Vance was just explaining that you’ve been under extreme emotional stress.”
“Mrs. Vance is currently committing slander on company property,” I said evenly, pulling my phone from my bag and laying it on the table between them. “David, I apologize for this intrusion. But since my mother-in-law has chosen to bring private matters into our workplace, I believe you deserve the full, objective truth.”
Gloria glared at me, her eyes spitting venom. “Rachel, don't make a fool of yourself in front of your superior—”
“Be quiet, Gloria,” I cut her off, my tone sharper than steel.
I tapped the screen of my phone. Marissa’s video began playing at maximum volume.
The audio filled the quiet boardroom. The happy birthday song. Gloria’s sharp reprimand. The loud, sickening *crack* of the slap. Lily’s piercing wails. And finally, Ethan’s quiet, calculated whisper: *“Mom, I told you. Not in front of everyone.”*
David Harrison stared at the screen, his expression shifting from corporate awkwardness to outright horror. He looked from the phone to Gloria, whose face had flushed a dangerous shade of crimson.
“Get security,” David said coldly, not looking away from Gloria.
“Excuse me?” Gloria gasped, standing up indignantly. “I am a respected member of the historical society! You cannot speak to me—”
“You assaulted a two-year-old child and walked into my corporate office to manipulate me into firing her mother,” David stated, his voice flat with disgust. He pressed the intercom on his desk. “Security to the third-floor boardroom immediately. We have a trespasser who needs to be escorted off the premises and banned from the building.”
Gloria turned on me, her mask of maternal grace completely gone. Her mouth twisted into an ugly sneer. “You think you’ve won, you little nobody? Ethan has every dime of his trust fund behind him. We will bleed you dry in court until you have nothing left!”
May you like
“Then I’ll see you in court, Gloria,” I whispered, holding her gaze until security guards took her by the arms and led her out the door.
