Chapter 10 - The Mask Sinks

Courtroom 402 was grand, lined with dark oak panels and high, arched windows that let in the pale winter light.
Judge Morales, a woman in her late fifties with sharp, piercing dark eyes and a reputation for tolerating zero nonsense, sat behind the elevated bench. She glanced down at the thick case file, then peered over her half-moon glasses at the assembly.
"We are here on an emergency petition for an order of protection filed by Brooke and Trevor Hawthorne on behalf of their minor children, Colton and Penelope, against Judith Hawthorne," Judge Morales began. "I have also received an extraordinary filing from the State Attorney General's Public Integrity Unit."
Arthur Vance stood up immediately, smoothing his suit jacket. "Your Honor, if I may. This entire proceeding is an outrageous abuse of the court’s time. What we have here is a disgruntled daughter-in-law attempting to leverage false accusations of minor corporal discipline to extort my client's multi-million-dollar estate. Mrs. Judith Hawthorne is a pillar of this community, a major philanthropist—"
"Mr. Vance," Judge Morales interrupted, her voice dangerously quiet. "Did you listen to the digital exhibit submitted under seal by the Attorney General thirty minutes ago?"
Vance swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. "Your Honor, any alleged recordings were obtained illegally, in violation of state wiretapping statutes—"
"This is an emergency protective hearing involving child welfare, Mr. Vance," the judge cut him off sharply. "Wiretapping exclusions do not apply when documenting a felony in progress, particularly when that felony involves witness intimidation and the physical abuse of an eight-year-old boy."
Judge Morales turned a switch on her bench.
The courtroom's overhead speakers roared to life.
It wasn't just the recording of Judith threatening Colton, and it wasn't just the recording of her plotting with Vance to plant narcotics charges against me.
It was a third recording—one Colton had unknowingly preserved from a security camera in the Hawthorne estate’s kitchen from three weeks ago.
On the courtroom's large monitor, the black-and-white video played.
There was Colton, sitting at the kitchen island, carefully working on his third-grade homework. Judith walked into the frame, carrying a cup of tea. She stopped behind the boy, looked at his paper, and without a single word of warning, grabbed him by the hair, violently yanking his head backward until he let out a sharp cry of agony.
*"How many times do I have to tell you to use cursive, you stupid, clumsy little bastard?"* Judith’s voice rang through the courtroom, venomous and cruel. On screen, she slammed his face down against the wooden table, then pinched his upper arm with both hands, twisting the flesh until Colton was sobbing uncontrollably.
The entire courtroom fell dead silent.
Even Vance’s co-counsel looked down at the mahogany defense table in visible disgust.
Judith sprang to her feet, her composure completely disintegrating. "That video is an invasion of my privacy! That is my house! I have the right to discipline my own family! That boy is a deceitful, manipulative little wretch who needs to learn obedience!"
"Mrs. Hawthorne, sit down!" Judge Morales slammed her gavel down with the force of a gunshot.
"I will not sit down!" Judith shrieked, her face turning a mottled, furious purple. She pointed a trembling finger at Trevor. "I made you! I paid for everything you have! You belong to me, Trevor! You and those miserable, worthless children! You are nothing without the Hawthorne name!"
"Bailiff," Judge Morales ordered, her voice trembling with barely suppressed fury. "Take Mrs. Hawthorne into custody for direct criminal contempt of court."
Two armed bailiffs immediately moved toward the defense table.
Judith backed away, her hands flailing wildly. "Don't you touch me! Do you know who I am? Arthur, do something! Call Harold! Call the governor!"
Vance didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at the floor, completely abandoning her.
Within seconds, the bailiffs had Judith’s arms pinned behind her back. The sharp, mechanical *click* of handcuffs echoed through the high-ceilinged room.
Judge Morales leaned forward, looking down at the thrashing, screaming matriarch with pure revulsion. "An absolute restraining order is granted. Judith Hawthorne is barred from coming within five hundred yards of Brooke, Trevor, Colton, and Penelope Hawthorne, effective permanently. Furthermore, based on the evidence presented, I am remanding Mrs. Hawthorne without bail pending immediate felony indictments for aggravated child abuse, witness tampering, and conspiracy."
As Judith was dragged through the side door of the courtroom, her furious screams muffled by the heavy soundproof wood, Trevor slumped into his chair, burying his face in his hands.

It was over. The dragon had been slain. We were finally free.
Or so we thought.
