Chapter 9 - The Fall of Vanguard

The smile froze on Julian Croft’s face.
Two federal agents in crisp dark suits stepped out from behind the grand marble pillars of the courtyard, walking directly up to Julian.
"Julian Croft?" the lead agent asked, pulling out his badge. "You are under arrest for commercial wire fraud, corporate bribery, and criminal conspiracy under the Federal Racketeering Act."
The entire room erupted into gasps and murmurs. Guests pulled out their phones, video recording the scene as the top real estate mogul in South Beach was instructed to turn around and place his hands behind his back.
"This is insane!" Julian shouted, struggling against the handcuffs as agents secured his wrists. "On what grounds?!"
"On the grounds of the fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer sent from your Cayman shell account to Helena Montgomery to sabotage Lumina Dining Group," I answered, stepping closer, looking him dead in the eye. "And on the recorded confession your attorney's brother provided to federal prosecutors two hours ago to avoid his own disbarment."
Julian’s head snapped toward his brother, Richard Croft, who was standing near the bar, looking away in deep shame.
Helena let out a high-pitched, terrified shriek as an agent stepped up to her as well.
"Mrs. Helena Montgomery?" the second agent asked. "You are being taken into custody as an unindicted co-conspirator in federal commercial fraud and money laundering."
"No! No!" Helena screamed, flailing her arms, her diamond bracelets clinking violently as guests stepped back in disgust. "I am a guest here! I am a Montgomery! You can't touch me! Camille, tell them! Tell them it's a mistake!"
I looked down at the woman who had called me 'the help,' who had laughed while her son spent my hard-earned money, who had tried to sell out my life's work to corporate predators.
"You said it yourself three weeks ago, Helena," I said softly, my voice cold and absolute. "In the end, it all stays in the family. And today, my family is Lumina."
The agents escorted Julian Croft and Helena Montgomery out through the grand arched entrance of Vizcaya in full view of two hundred of Miami's most prominent citizens, camera flashes strobing against the night sky as news crews rushed to capture the arrest.
I stood in the center of the courtyard, holding my glass of sparkling water, surrounded by applause from local business owners and female entrepreneurs who had watched the entire showdown unfold.

I took a slow, deep breath.
The battle was finally over. The predators were behind bars, the lies were exposed, and my restaurant was safe forever.
