Chapter 6 - Freezing the Assets

The next morning at 8:00 a.m., I sat across from Jonathan Drake, the most ruthless forensic accountant and asset-recovery attorney in the tri-county area. His office on the fourteenth floor of the downtown financial tower smelled of polished leather and high-stakes litigation.
Spread across the glass table were dozens of spreadsheets, bank statements, and wire transfer receipts that Drake’s team had extracted overnight using emergency subpoenas.
"Your instincts were spot-on, Tessa," Drake said, tapping a red pen against a thick financial dossier. "Nolan wasn't just having an affair with Brianna Cole. He was systematically looting your joint business accounts to fund an entire shadow life."
I took a slow sip of black coffee, feeling the dull ache of betrayal settle into a cold, sharp resolve. "Show me."
"Over the last fourteen months," Drake began, turning the dossier toward me, "Nolan transferred roughly one hundred and eighty thousand dollars out of Mercer Consulting’s operating account. He disguised the withdrawals as vendor payments to a shell entity called 'Apex Logistics LLC.'"
"Who owns Apex Logistics?" I asked, though I already suspected the answer.
"Judith Mercer," Drake replied with a dark grin. "Your mother-in-law opened the LLC in Nevada two years ago. Nolan sent corporate consulting revenue directly to his mother. In turn, Judith used that money to pay off the back taxes on her primary residence, buy high-end jewelry for Brianna, and—here’s the kicker—funnel fifty thousand dollars into an offshore crypto brokerage account in the Cayman Islands."
I closed my eyes for a brief moment, remembering every time Nolan had complained that our consulting firm was having a slow quarter, every time he had convinced me to delay taking a dividend so we could 'reinvest in company growth.'
He had literally stolen from my sweat and labor to bail out his failing mother and buy gifts for the woman carrying his child.
"Is the money gone?" I asked.
"Not all of it," Drake replied, pulling out an official blue-backed document. "Because you are the sole managing member of Mercer Consulting LLC with one hundred percent voting control, Nolan’s withdrawals constitute direct corporate embezzlement and breach of fiduciary duty. At six o'clock this morning, Judge Harrison signed an emergency Mareva injunction."
I looked at the order. "An asset freeze."
"A complete, global freeze," Drake confirmed, leaning forward. "Judith’s personal checking accounts, Apex Logistics’ corporate accounts, Nolan’s private accounts, and his luxury pickup truck have all been encumbered. As of right now, neither Judith nor Nolan can access more than five hundred dollars a week for basic living expenses without written court approval."
"What about the crypto account in the Caymans?"
"We served the domestic intermediary exchange in New York. The fifty thousand is locked pending a fraudulent conveyance hearing," Drake said with immense satisfaction. "Judith thought she was playing high-society chess. She didn't realize she was committing federal wire fraud."
My phone buzzed on the glass table. The caller ID flashed: *Nolan.*
I put the call on speaker.
"Tessa!" Nolan’s voice was hysterical, panting as if he had run a marathon. "What did you do?! I just tried to pay for gas and all my cards were declined! The teller at the bank said my accounts have a federal lock on them!"
"Good morning, Nolan," I said evenly. "You're speaking on a recorded line in my attorney’s office."
There was a choked sound on the other end, followed by the muffled background shriek of Judith screaming in panic.
"Tessa, please!" Nolan begged, his voice cracking into full-blown tears. "Mom’s house is scheduled for a property tax lien sale next month! We transferred that money to save the family estate! If that freeze stays in place, the county is going to seize Mom's house!"
"You should have thought about that before you stole one hundred and eighty thousand dollars from my business, Nolan," I answered. "You and your mother wanted to treat me like an unpaid worker bee who could be discarded the moment you found a younger replacement. Now you get to experience what it’s like to live on the money you actually earn."
"Tessa, Brianna is having complications!" Nolan wept, trying one last pathetic emotional manipulation. "She’s stressed out! The doctor says she needs absolute bed rest, and we don't have money for her prescriptions or a hotel!"
"Tell her to return the diamond tennis bracelet you bought with my money," I said coldly. "Pawn shops usually pay thirty cents on the dollar. That should cover her prescriptions. See you in court, Nolan."
I hung up the phone before he could reply.
Jonathan Drake raised his coffee cup in a mock toast. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Tessa."
May you like
"The game is just getting started, Jonathan," I said, standing up and smoothing my pencil skirt. "Judith still thinks her brother, Representative Vance, can pull strings to break the lien on my house. Let’s make sure the State Ethics Commission receives a copy of Apex Logistics’ wire transfers before lunch."
