Chapter 4 - The Grand Entrance

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, cascading white orchids, and New York's most formidable elite. Flashbulbs detonated like silent lightning across the red carpet outside, where limousines lined up around the block.
I stood on the mezzanine landing, looking down at the magnificent spectacle below. I wore a bespoke, emerald-green silk crepe gown cut with razor-sharp precision, draping effortlessly across my shoulders. Around my throat was nothing—bare, radiant skin. No jewelry was necessary when one possessed absolute ownership of the room.
"Claire," Arthur whispered, coming up beside me. He wore a crisp tuxedo, holding a sleek black leather portfolio. "The federal agents from the financial crimes division are waiting in the private security suite. The press release has been uploaded to the PR Newswire server. It only requires your final authorization."
"Hold it until I step off the podium," I said quietly. "Let Andrew have his moment first. A man only falls truly hard when he believes he has reached the very summit."
At precisely eight o'clock, a sudden surge of murmurs rippled through the grand foyer.
The heavy gilded doors swung open, and Andrew Holloway stepped into the ballroom. He was immaculately tailored in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, his chin held high, projecting the triumphant arrogance of a Roman conqueror.
On his arm was Olivia Vance.
A collective gasp swept through the high-society crowd. Olivia was twenty-six, radiant with false youth, wearing a strapless crimson gown that clung to every curve. But it was not her dress that drew the horrified, fascinated stares of every matriarch and financier in Manhattan.
It was the Winter Tide.
The legendary necklace sat against Olivia’s chest, its seventy-carat deep blue sapphire surrounded by tiers of flawless marquise-cut diamonds, sparkling under the three-tiered crystal chandeliers. The older guests recognized it instantly. Whispers spread like wildfire across the ballroom floor.
*Is that Eleanor Sterling’s necklace?*
*Why is Andrew’s junior associate wearing Claire’s family heirloom?*
*Where is Claire?*
Andrew basked in the attention. He smiled for the flashing cameras, his hand resting possessively on Olivia’s bare hip. When a reporter from *The Wall Street Journal* approached with a microphone, Andrew leaned in, speaking with unmistakable clarity.
"Good evening, everyone," Andrew announced, his voice carrying easily across the hushed foyer. "Tonight is about entering a new era. Growth requires bold choices, both in business and in life. And Olivia is the woman I want beside me now—in every venture."
Olivia tilted her head back, beaming up at him with a predatory, triumphant smile. She turned toward the room, deliberately resting one manicured hand against the pendant, ensuring every camera caught the light refracting off the massive sapphire.
From the top of the marble staircase, I watched them.
Andrew looked up then. His eyes met mine. For a fraction of a second, his smug grin faltered as he took in my emerald gown and the absolute stillness in my posture. He had expected me to be hiding in tears in a dressing room, or perhaps attempting to make an embarrassing scene that he could easily dismiss as the hysterics of a discarded, jealous wife.

Instead, I raised my champagne glass toward him with a slow, chilling nod of acknowledgment.
He frowned slightly, his arrogance quickly rushing back to fill the void. He whispered something into Olivia’s ear, and the two of them began their slow, triumphant march through the parted crowd toward the VIP lounge, certain that my silence was their total victory.
