Chapter 10 - An Offer of Mercy Denied

Grant dropped to his knees on the concrete, his fingers closing around the cold brass key. He didn't look like an entertainment mogul anymore. He looked like a shattered, desperate child.
"You can't leave me with nothing," he sobbed, his voice muffled against the pavement. "The IRS... Julian said the escrows are being referred to the Department of Justice. Natalie, that’s prison time! Wire fraud is ten to twenty years!"
"Then you should have thought about the federal sentencing guidelines before you opened an account in the Caymans," I said coldly.
"Give me a settlement!" he screamed, looking up, his face twisted in desperation. "A non-disclosure agreement! A severance package! Two million dollars! Just two million, and I'll sign the divorce papers tomorrow! I'll never say your name again! I'll vanish!"
Julian stepped forward, looking down over the rim of his glasses. "Mr. Holloway, the current balance of your personal checking account is forty-two dollars and sixteen cents. The legal fees Arden Global has incurred today alone exceed three hundred thousand dollars. You are in no position to negotiate a settlement."
"I have leverage!" Grant suddenly hissed, his demeanor flipping violently from groveling to vicious, the cornered rat finally showing its teeth. "You think you covered all your tracks, Natalie? I know about the Henderson Trust! I know about the offshore licensing deals your grandfather set up in Switzerland in the nineties! If I go down, I’m taking the Arden name to the front page of every paper in the country! I’ll burn your family’s reputation to the ground!"
Julian and I exchanged a brief, almost bored glance.
"Grant," I said softly, taking a step back toward the front door. "My grandfather didn't have an offshore trust in Switzerland."
Grant blinked, caught off guard. "What?"
"That folder you found in the study safe two years ago? The one labeled 'Henderson Swiss Holding'?" I smiled, a genuine, chilling smile. "I put that there on purpose. I created those dummy records the day after I caught you slipping my grandmother’s diamond pendant into Sabrina’s purse."
Grant’s face drained of what little color it had left.
"You were looking for leverage from the day we got married," I said. "So I gave you a fake map. Every single document you think you have on Arden Global is a legally certified honeypot designed to trigger an immediate self-incrimination clause under federal whistle-blower laws. If you leak that file to the press, you aren't exposing my family. You're submitting a confession of corporate espionage against yourself."
He slumped completely, his forehead touching the cold stone of the porch step.

"Pack your boxes, Grant," I said quietly. "The moving crew leaves at six. Anything left on the driveway will be loaded into the incinerator."
