Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of Hayes Global Enterprises occupied the top three floors of a glass monolith overlooking Central Park.
At 10:00 AM on Thursday, Daniel walked into the executive boardroom. He had spent an hour in the mirror trying to conceal the dark, purple rings beneath his eyes. He had jumped at every shadow in his apartment all night, jumping whenever the central heating kicked on. He hadn't slept a second.
He was running on espresso, amphetamines, and desperate ambition.
Victoria sat at the long mahogany conference table, surrounded by twelve members of the board of directors. She looked sleek, untouchable in an ivory pantsuit, a leather folder resting beneath her manicured hands.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Daniel said, his voice smooth, reclaiming his corporate persona. He slipped into the leather high-back chair at the head of the table—the seat that had belonged to my grandfather, and then to me. "I want to thank you all for convening on such short notice during this... impossible time."
The board members bowed their heads in sympathetic deference.
"Under the emergency provisions of the trust," Daniel continued, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table, "I am requesting an immediate vote of corporate continuity. With Claire gone, the voting shares must be unified under the surviving executive trustee to prevent market volatility. Victoria has drafted the resolution."
Victoria smiled thinly, opening her folder. "The paperwork is in order. We have the emergency authorization from the surrogate court pending signature this afternoon. All we require is the board’s unanimous assent to appoint Daniel as Chief Executive Officer and sole trustee."
"I move to call the vote," an older board member said softly.
"Second," another chimed in.
"All in favor?" Daniel asked, his heart hammering against his ribs. This was it. The empire was his.
"Before you cast that vote," a sharp, aristocratic voice rang out from the back of the room.
The double doors swung open. Arthur Vance strode into the boardroom, his long wool coat billowing behind him. Beside him walked two men in dark suits carrying heavy leather briefcases.
Daniel’s smile vanished. "Arthur. This is an internal executive session. You are Claire’s personal estate attorney. You have no standing here."
"I have standing anywhere the Hayes family name is being desecrated, Mr. Hayes," Arthur replied coolly, reaching the foot of the long table.
Victoria snapped her folder shut. "Mr. Vance, this is highly inappropriate. Daniel is mourning. The company requires leadership."
"The company requires a leader who isn't a thief and a fraud, Ms. Sterling," Arthur said, his voice cutting through the room like a razor.
He gestured to the men beside him. They opened their briefcases and placed a thick, blue-bound dossier in front of every single board member.
"What is the meaning of this?" Daniel hissed, rising from his chair, his hands flat on the mahogany. "Security! Get this man out of my building!"
"It's not your building yet, Daniel," Arthur snapped. "What you have before you, ladies and gentlemen of the board, is a preliminary audit conducted by the forensic accounting firm Deloitte & Touche over the last seventy-two hours."
Murmurs rippled down the table as board members began flipping through the pages.
"Over the past eighteen months," Arthur stated, his eyes locked onto Daniel, "the Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Daniel Hayes, in direct collusion with junior partner Victoria Sterling, embezzled approximately fourteen million dollars from the Hayes Charitable Foundation into three shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands."
Victoria’s face drained of all color. "That’s an outright lie! Those were legitimate offshore investments approved by—"
"Approved by no one," Arthur interrupted. "Because the signatory signatures for the board authorizations were digitally forged. Just as the signature on Claire Hayes’s new five-million-dollar life insurance policy was forged."
Daniel’s knuckles turned white. His pulse was roaring in his ears. The walls of the boardroom felt like they were closing in. "You have no proof of forgery! Claire signed those transfers! She gave me full power of attorney!"
"Claire is dead, Daniel!" Arthur shouted, slamming his palm onto the table. The sharp crack made every director flinch. "And dead women cannot testify to your lies! But the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has already impounded the server logs. An indictment for wire fraud, bank fraud, and grand larceny is being prepared as we speak."
Daniel looked down the table. The sympathetic faces of the board members were gone. In their place were looks of horror, suspicion, and disgust.
"The vote is tabled," the senior director said coldly, closing his dossier and standing up. "Until these allegations are cleared by federal authorities, Mr. Hayes, your access to corporate accounts is immediately suspended."
"You can't do this!" Daniel bellowed, his composure shattering entirely. "I am her husband! I am the heir!"

"You are a suspect, Mr. Hayes," Arthur said quietly, turning on his heel toward the exit. "And I suggest you find a very good criminal defense lawyer before the probate hearing at two o'clock."
