Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

The room went so quiet you could hear the champagne bubbles popping in the crystal flutes.
"No..." Preston whispered, taking a step back, shaking his head wildly. "No! That's impossible! The Ashford deal was finalized last week! The board approved it!"
"The board approved a deal with Ashford Capital," Gideon corrected calmly, adjusting his dark blue cuffs. "They didn't realize that three days ago, I transferred sixty percent of the voting shares in the logistics acquisition portfolio directly to Vivian."
Cassidy grabbed Preston’s arm, her voice rising into a panic. "Preston! What is he talking about?! You told me we were getting twelve million dollars in liquid cash tonight!"
I turned to Cassidy, offering her a sweet, razor-sharp smile.
"He lied to you, Cassidy," I said smoothly. "Just like he lied to me for five years. Preston didn't bring twelve million dollars to the table. He brought four million dollars in hidden corporate debt that he illegally transferred into my name using forged signatures while I was recovering from my ninth skin-graft surgery."
The crowd gasped again. Two prominent board members from Preston’s firm stepped out from the audience, their faces dark with fury.
"Is this true, Vance?" Arthur Pendelton, the senior board chairman, demanded, stepping into Preston’s space. "Did you forge your wife's signature on corporate liabilities?"
"Arthur, no! She's lying! She's crazy!" Preston shouted, sweat breaking out across his forehead, ruining his expensive hair styling. "She's trying to ruin me because I'm leaving her for Cassidy!"
"Am I lying, Preston?" I asked.
I held up my phone, tapped the screen, and connected it directly to the ballroom's high-definition presentation monitors—monitors meant to display the annual corporate slides.
A high-resolution document flashed onto the giant sixty-foot screens hanging above the stage.
It was an emergency forensic handwriting audit performed by the New York State Bureau of Investigation, showing side-by-side comparisons of my actual signature against the forged documents Preston had filed three months ago.
Underneath the audit was a audio waveform file.
I pressed play.
Preston’s own voice echoed loudly through the ballroom speakers, clear as crystal:
“Don’t worry, Cassidy. Without me, that woman is nothing but a cripple clinging to my status. As soon as my equity stake in the firm is secure, I’ll throw the divorce papers in her face and let her rot in poverty.”
The ballroom exploded into chaos.
Socialites turned away in disgust. Arthur Pendelton turned to the security guards standing near the entrance.
"Remove Preston Vance and Cassidy Vaughn from this building immediately," Arthur ordered coldly. "And call our legal counsel. We are filing corporate fraud charges against him before midnight."
Cassidy screamed as two heavy-set security guards grabbed her by her upper arms, pulling her away from Preston. "Get your hands off me! I'm pregnant! Preston, do something!"
Preston didn't do anything. He stood frozen in the middle of the floor, his eyes fixed on the giant screen playing his own treason to the world.
As the guards pulled him backward, Preston looked at me, his eyes wide with absolute horror.
"Vivian..." he choked out. "Please... you dragged me out of the fire... you loved me..."
May you like
I stepped toward him, leaned down close so only he could hear my final words, and touched the diamond-lined scars on my shoulder.
"I dragged a good man out of that fire, Preston," I whispered softly. "I didn't realize I was saving a monster. And now, I'm going to watch you burn."
