Chapter 11 - The Knock at the Door

Two months after the bloodbath in Boston, peace had finally returned to my life.

The California evening air was warm and smelled of blooming jasmine and sea salt. I sat on the expansive flagstone patio of my Montecito home, watching the sun dip below the Pacific horizon in streaks of crimson, gold, and violet.

The financial restructuring had been a historic success. The boutique hotel portfolio had been separated from Stanhope Enterprises, now operating under my full ownership as Vance-Cole Hospitality. Charles had retreated to an addiction and wellness retreat in Switzerland, completely stripped of his corporate authority and living on a modest trust stipend. Cordelia had retreated to her country estate in Maine, unable to show her face in Boston society ever again.

Phoebe had taken a financial settlement from Richard’s frozen estate to raise the twins quietly in the Midwest, far away from any cameras.

I took a sip of chilled Pinot Grigio.

Beside me, Julian leaned back in his wicker chair, a comfortable, warm smile on his face. He reached across the small table and gently placed his hand over mine.

"You built an empire from the ashes, Hannah," he said softly. "Are you finally happy?"

I looked out at the ocean, feeling the gentle ocean breeze against my skin. For the first time in my adult life, I had no secrets to keep. No husband to protect. No cruel mother-in-law to appease.

"I am," I smiled, squeezing his hand. "I truly am."

Suddenly, the electronic chime of the front gate interrupted the quiet evening.

Julian frowned slightly, glancing at his watch. "Are you expecting someone? It’s past eight o'clock."

"No," I replied, feeling a strange, sudden prickle of cold awareness at the base of my neck. "No one has this address except the legal team."

My phone on the table lit up with a notification from the gate security camera.

Standing outside the iron gates in the twilight wasn't Charles. It wasn't Cordelia.

It was a courier dressed in an unmarked dark suit, holding a sealed, heavy crimson envelope bearing an old European wax seal—a crest featuring an eagle clutching a serpent.

I tapped the intercom on my phone. "Can I help you?"

"Mrs. Hannah Vance?" the courier’s voice sounded flat, mechanical, and accented with a heavy Swiss-German cadence. "I have a personal delivery requiring your biometric signature. Consigned by the private estate of the late Edward Stanhope Senior."

My blood ran instantly cold.

Edward Stanhope Senior was Charles’s grandfather—the founder of the dynasty, who had died fifteen years ago in a private plane crash in the Alps.

"Leave it at the gate box," I managed to say, my throat suddenly dry.

"I cannot, Madame," the courier replied without hesitation. "The protocol established in 2009 states this must be handed directly to you upon the total dissolution of Charles Stanhope’s control over the company. It contains the real medical archive from Zurich."

Julian stood up immediately, his protective instincts flaring. "What medical archive?"

May you like

The courier looked directly into the camera lens, his expression unblinking.

"The archive proving that Charles Stanhope’s sterility was not an accident from the mumps, Mrs. Vance," the courier said, his voice sending a shockwave through the quiet California night. "It was chemically induced by your own late father... and your marriage to Charles was never a coincidence."
