Chapter 10 - The Clean Break

The hallway conference lasted exactly twenty-two minutes.
When Pendelton and Grant returned, the dynamic had completely shifted. Grant looked broken, his shoulders slumped, his eyes fixed on the carpet. Tyler and Melissa had already slipped out of the room during the recess, too ashamed and stunned to face me any longer.
Pendelton sat down and pulled out a clean settlement draft.
"My client," Pendelton began, clearing his throat, "is prepared to execute a full and unconditional marital settlement agreement today."
Marcus nodded once. "State the terms for the record."
"Grant Mercer will waive all claims to spousal maintenance, present and future," Pendelton said methodically. "He disclaims any equitable interest in the Lincoln Park residential property, acknowledging it as petitioner's sole pre-marital asset. He agrees to liquidate the funds in the Cayman LLC account within ten business days to fully reimburse petitioner for commingled household expenditures and the educational loans extended to Tyler Mercer."
Pendelton paused, glancing at Grant, who sat motionless like a statue.
"Furthermore," Pendelton continued, "regarding the unborn child, Mr. Mercer agrees to standard statutory child support based on his maximum potential earnings, while granting sole legal and physical custody to Rachel Mercer, with limited supervised visitation rights to be re-evaluated upon the child’s second birthday."
Marcus turned to me. "Rachel? Does this satisfy your terms?"
I looked at Grant. For four years, I had loved this man. I had believed in his potential, forgave his arrogance, covered his weaknesses, and shouldered his family's burdens without complaint. I had thought we were building an empire together.
In reality, I had been building a fortress for a thief.
"There is one more condition," I said.
Grant finally lifted his gaze, his eyes hollow and filled with tears. "What, Rachel? What else could you possibly want from me?"
"I want Melissa's public apology," I said firmly. "Posted on the exact same platforms where she attempted to destroy my career. Word for word, admitting that her statements were fabricated and malicious. If it isn't posted by midnight tonight, the defamation lawsuit proceeds."
Grant swallowed hard, then turned to Pendelton and nodded slowly. "I'll make her do it. She'll post it."
Marcus pushed the document across the table.
I picked up the heavy steel pen and signed my maiden name: *Rachel Lindqvist*.
Grant signed next. His signature was shaky, barely legible.

When the papers were gathered and stamped, I stood up, buttoned my coat, and picked up my purse. I didn't say goodbye. I didn't offer a platitude or a wish for good luck. I simply turned and walked toward the heavy glass doors.
As the elevator descended forty-two floors toward the bustling Chicago streets, I placed a hand over my stomach. The air felt cleaner. The city felt wider. I was finally free.
