Chapter 7 - The Socialite’s Fall

The news had long since spilled out of the financial pages and onto the front covers of the global tabloids.

In the luxury penthouse on 72nd Street, Chloe Vance was frantically stuffing vintage Birkin bags, diamond necklaces, and designer shoes into three matching Louis Vuitton trunks. Her hands were shaking so hard she dropped an eighteen-karat gold compact onto the marble floor, shattering the mirror inside.
"Damn it! Damn it!" she cursed, kicking the shards away.
Her phone buzzed continuously on the vanity table. It wasn't Richard—she had blocked his number twenty times over. It was her social circle. The heiresses she had brunch with every Sunday were sharing memes of her father kneeling in front of the Sullivan manor. Her Instagram account had gained two hundred thousand comments in twenty-four hours, ninety-nine percent of them mocking her as a "home-wrecking social climber who picked a penniless convict."
The front door opened with a heavy, unceremonious thud.
Chloe ran into the living room. "Dad! Thank God you're here. You need to call the district attorney right now. The press is camping outside the lobby, and the doorman told me the moving vans aren't allowed to load my—"
She stopped.
Arthur Vance walked in, accompanied by two women wearing gray institutional blazers. Behind them walked a burly moving supervisor holding an inventory tablet.
"What is this?" Chloe asked, a cold knot forming in her stomach.
"Pack one suitcase, Chloe," Arthur said, his voice completely flat, devoid of the grandfatherly affection he had showered on her for twenty-six years.
"One suitcase? Dad, I have six hundred thousand dollars worth of couture in that walk-in closet!"
"You had six hundred thousand dollars worth of couture," Arthur corrected coldly. "Purchased with lines of credit guaranteed by Vanguard Holdings. The court-appointed receiver has seized all of it. It’s being cataloged and auctioned off at Sotheby’s next month to reimburse the employee pension fund Richard looted."
Chloe gasped, taking two steps back, her manicured hand flying to her chest. "You’re letting them take my clothes? My jewelry? Dad, I’m your daughter!"
"And you brought a criminal into my inner circle!" Arthur’s voice cracked like thunder, making the two women behind him jump. "You paraded him at the annual gala! You mocked a six-year-old child in the lobby of Vanguard Tower! Do you know what you did to this family? Do you have any concept of how close we came to absolute ruin?"
"Richard lied to me!" Chloe sobbed, tears ruining her expensive mascara. "He told me he was an orphan! He told me his ex-girlfriend was an insane stalker! I was a victim too!"
"You were a willing accomplice who wanted a pet executive to show off at the Met Gala," Arthur said, disgusted.
One of the women in gray blazers stepped forward, holding out a plain manila envelope and a laminated plastic badge.
"Miss Vance," the woman said professionally. "My name is Director Hayes—no relation to Richard. I manage the Saint Jude Community Food Bank in Newark. As per the restructuring agreement signed by your father, your employment begins tomorrow at 7:00 AM."
Chloe looked at the plastic badge as if it were coated in cyanide. On it was her un-retouched driver’s license photo and the title: *JUNIOR LOGISTICS VOLUNTEER – PANTRY DIVISION.*
"I’m not working in a food bank in New Jersey!" Chloe shrieked, backing toward the balcony windows. "I have a degree in Art History from Columbia! I curate private galleries!"
"You curate nothing," Arthur said, stepping between her and the trunks. "Your trust fund is suspended. Your credit cards have been canceled. If you report to Newark tomorrow morning, you will receive an allowance of eight hundred dollars a week from the family foundation, plus the keys to a two-bedroom apartment near the train station. If you refuse..."
Arthur took a deep, agonizing breath.
"If you refuse, I will formally disinherit you before five o'clock today. You will leave this apartment with the clothes on your back and zero family support. Choose."
Chloe looked at her father. For the first time in her life, she saw no room for negotiation. The spoiled, shielded socialite who had sneered at my child’s raincoat was suddenly stripped of every golden barrier that had protected her from reality.

She fell to her knees on the marble floor, weeping hysterically, her polished nails clawing at the empty designer luggage.
