Chapter 7 - The Mother-in-Law’s Humiliation

By 4:00 PM on Friday, the pressure had reached Eleanor.
She didn't call from her own phone. She used Arthur’s cell, knowing I might ignore her number.
"Claire!" she shrilled the moment I answered. Her voice lacked the aristocratic condescension she had perfected over decades. She sounded wild, ragged, and desperate.
"Hello, Eleanor."
"You have to stop this right now! Daniel is pacing the floor with a bottle of scotch! The bank sent two couriers to the house with formal notices of default! Men in suits, Claire! On our street! In front of the neighbors!"
"It's not your street, Eleanor. You live forty minutes away in a townhouse Daniel pays the HOA fees for."
"How dare you speak to me like that!" she shrieked. "I am Daniel’s mother! I raised the man who provided you with a life of luxury!"
I laughed out loud. It was a clear, ringing sound that felt entirely foreign after years of biting my tongue.
"Eleanor, let's clear up some revisionist history. When I met your son, he had thirty-two thousand dollars in credit card debt and was driving an eleven-year-old sedan with a cracked windshield. My family paid off his debts. My grandmother’s estate funded his first three leases. And for the last five years, *I* personally approved the five-thousand-dollar monthly stipend that Daniel transfers to your account so you can pretend to be a woman of leisure at the country club."
There was a dead, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. Eleanor’s breath hitched.
"You... you didn't..."
"I signed every single transfer check, Eleanor. Daniel never even checked the ledger. He thought money came from the sky. And do you know what the best part is?"
"What?" she whispered, terrified.
"Since Daniel informed me that we are divorcing, I have ceased all discretionary personal disbursements from our joint account. That includes your country club dues, your luxury lease on the Mercedes, and the cleaning service for your townhouse. If you want those paid, go ask Daniel. Oh, wait—his personal accounts are linked to the corporate margin call. He can’t even buy himself a sandwich right now without getting declined."
"You monster," Eleanor whimpered, her voice cracking with pure terror. "You calculated this!"
"No, Eleanor. I cooked for twelve hours yesterday. I prepared a holiday for your family while you sat in my living room plotting my replacement. Daniel chose this path. I’m just letting him walk it alone."

I pressed 'End Call' and blocked Arthur’s number as well.
The house of cards wasn't just wobbling. The bottom floor had completely collapsed.
