Chapter 8 - The Breach

Two hours after Briana’s frantic call, the quiet night inside my condo was shattered.
At precisely eight fifteen PM, heavy, violent blows began raining against my front door. The sound echoed through the hallway like cannon fire.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"OPEN THE DAMN DOOR, MAYA!" Trevor’s voice roared from the hallway, distorted with rage. "OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW OR I SWEAR TO GOD I'LL BREAK IT DOWN!"
"YOU EVIL, DECEITFUL BITCH!" Eleanor’s voice shrieked alongside his. "YOU REPORTED MY DAUGHTER TO THE POLICE?! YOU FROZE HER MONEY?!"
I stood in the center of my living room, my heart hammering against my ribs. My hands were steady as I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed 911.
"911, what is your emergency?" the dispatcher answered smoothly.
"My name is Maya Vance," I said, keeping my voice loud, clear, and perfectly articulate. "I am inside my apartment at 1420 Glenarm Place, Unit 402. My estranged husband, Trevor Vance, and his mother, Eleanor Vance, are currently attempting to violently breach my front entrance. I have an active legal separation proceeding against him, and they are shouting threats through the door."
"Officers are dispatched and en route to your location, ma'am," the dispatcher instructed. "Stay away from the door and stay on the line with me."
"I am stepping back into the living room now," I reported.
Outside, the pounding stopped for a brief five seconds. Then came a sharp, metallic scraping sound coming from inside the lock cylinder.
My blood ran cold.
Trevor had brought a commercial lock-picking kit or a stolen duplicate key from the building manager’s master set.
CLICK.
The heavy brass deadbolt retracted.
The front door slammed open, rebounding violently against the wall. Trevor stood in the doorway, his eyes wild, his hair disheveled, looking like a man completely unhinged. Behind him stood Eleanor, her face twisted into a mask of pure, demonic rage.
"You thought you could mess with my family?!" Trevor screamed, taking three massive strides across the entryway rug into my living room. "You thought you could call the cops on my sister?!"
"Get out of my home!" I shouted, backing away toward the kitchen counter. "The police are on their way right now!"
"I don't give a damn about the police!" Trevor roared, closing the distance between us in two seconds.
Before I could reach the kitchen island, Trevor lunged forward. His hands grabbed my shoulders with terrifying force, slamming my back hard against the hardwood floor. The impact knocked the wind straight out of my lungs, making the room spin in a dizzying blur of lights.
"Hold her down, Mom!" Trevor ordered, his voice raw and raspy.
Eleanor dropped to her knees beside me, her heavy coat pressing against my ribs. She grabbed both of my wrists, pinning them firmly against the floorboards with all of her weight. I thrashed and kicked, but Trevor pinned my knees down with his shins, neutralizing my movements.
"Trevor, stop!" I gasped, fighting for air. "Stop!"
May you like
Trevor stood up briefly, turning toward the kitchen counters. His eyes swept over the knife block, then settled on the magnetic strip mounted near the sink.
He reached out and grabbed my heavy, ten-inch stainless steel kitchen shears.
