Chapter 6 - Evelyn’s Plea

The next morning, before the legal injunction could even be officially served, an unexpected visitor arrived at my home.
I was in the kitchen packing lunchboxes for the twins when the doorbell rang. Noah opened the door, his tall frame blocking the entrance.
Standing on our porch, looking remarkably smaller and far less regal than she had at the baby shower, was Evelyn Mercer.
She was wearing an oversized trench coat, her hair slightly disheveled, her usual icy arrogance replaced by a look of sheer exhaustion.
“Claire...” Evelyn spoke, her voice lacking its usual sharp edge. “Please. I need to talk to you.”
Noah looked at me, leaving the decision entirely in my hands.
I took a breath, stepped forward, and opened the door wider. “Let her in, Noah.”
Evelyn walked into our bright, sunlit kitchen. She looked around the room—at the framed family photos on the wall, the children’s drawings pinned to the refrigerator, the warm, lived-in comfort of a true home. She looked like a ghost wandering into a world she didn't belong in.
“What do you want, Evelyn?” I asked directly, keeping my distance near the kitchen island.
Evelyn clutched her leather handbag tight against her chest. “I came to ask you to stop. Please. Withdraw the law firm’s lawsuit. Take down the legal notices.”
I let out a cold, soft laugh. “Withdraw? Evelyn, your son posted photos of my four-year-old children on the internet to lie about my character. He tried to destroy my career twice.”
“He’s spiraling, Claire!” Evelyn cried out, her eyes filling with real tears. “Vanessa took her things and moved back to her parents’ estate yesterday! She’s threatening to file for sole custody of the baby when it’s born! Daniel’s company suspended him without pay pending an internal investigation into those insurance records you found! He’s losing everything!”
“He brought every single piece of this on himself,” I said unfazed. “For seven years, Evelyn, you sat at my kitchen table while your son blamed me for our inability to have children. You made comments about my age, my body, my career. You made me feel like I was half a woman. And you knew I was hurting.”
Evelyn looked down at the floor, shame finally breaking through her posture. “I... I didn't know about his test results, Claire. I swear to God, I didn't know he lied about the medical report. He told me the doctors said it was you. I believed my son.”
“And when you found out the truth at the baby shower?” I challenged. “Did you hold him accountable? Or did you help him plan how to attack me again?”
Evelyn trembled, unable to answer.
“You chose to protect his ego over basic human decency,” I continued, my voice firm and unwavering. “And now, he has attacked my real family. My husband. My children. I am not the weak girl you used to bully, Evelyn. I am a mother protecting her sons. And there is nothing on this earth stronger than that.”
Noah stepped beside me, putting a gentle, supportive hand on my lower back.
“You need to leave now, Mrs. Mercer,” Noah said, his tone icy and final. “If Daniel doesn't take down those posts and issue a full public retraction by 12:00 PM today, my brother and Sterling & Vance will file for emergency seizure of his financial accounts.”

Evelyn looked at us—at the united front we presented—and realized there were no tactics left to play. She was no longer dealing with a victim. She was dealing with consequences.
She turned around slowly and walked out the door without saying another word.
