Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

The room descended into a stunned, electric hush. The three other investors looked between Daniel and the police officers, their eyes widening in sudden realization.

“You’re trespassing!” Daniel snarled, jumping to his feet, knocking his chair backward. “Officers, remove these people immediately! This is a private event!”

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a folded warrant from his interior coat pocket. “Daniel Vance? I have a warrant for your arrest on four counts of felony identity fraud, three counts of grand larceny, and two counts of forgery issued by the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas.”

Daniel’s face drained of color until he looked like a corpse. “This is a misunderstanding! This is my son—Kevin, tell them! Tell them this was a family arrangement! You authorized those loans! You signed the papers!”

Kevin took two measured steps forward. In three months, the boy had grown. He stood tall, shoulders squared, his gaze cold, unwavering, and utterly free of fear.

“I didn't authorize anything,” Kevin said, his voice ringing through the ornate room with surgical clarity. “You forged my signature on twenty-six credit applications. You stole my mother’s estate. You stole my college fund. And you told me I was worthless.”

Kevin pulled a cashier’s check from his pocket—the restitution check my attorney had secured through the emergency seizure of Daniel’s hidden boat and remaining liquid accounts that afternoon.

“You’re not a father,” Kevin whispered, loud enough for every horrified guest to hear. “You’re a con artist who got caught.”

“Kevin! I’m your father!” Daniel shrieked, lunging toward him, but the two detectives moved with lightning speed, slamming Daniel face-first against the polished mahogany table. The expensive wine glasses shattered, dark red liquid pooling beneath Daniel’s cheek like fresh blood.

The handcuffs clicked shut with brutal, metallic finality.

As they dragged him toward the exit, Daniel thrashed, his hair wild, his face contorted into the mask of the monster he had always been. “You ruined me, Claire! You took my son! You took everything!”

“No, Daniel,” I told him as he was hauled past me into the corridor. “You spent twenty years eating your own family alive. We just stopped letting you feed.”
