Chapter 7 - The Unwelcome Delivery

The next day began with an illusion of peace. The sun broke through the clouds, reflecting off the wet gravel of the driveway. Dominic had left the bedroom early to coordinate with his team, leaving me to enjoy breakfast in bed.

Around ten o'clock, the head of domestic staff, Mrs. Gable, knocked softly on the door, carrying a silver tray.

"Pardon the interruption, Mrs. Varela," she said politely. "This package arrived via private courier fifteen minutes ago. Matteo’s team scanned it for explosives and toxins, and it cleared all security protocols, but it is marked strictly personal for your eyes only."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," I said, setting my book aside.

The parcel was a flat, rigid cardboard envelope. There was no return address, only my full maiden name and former married name handwritten across the front in black ink: *Clara Vance.*

My stomach churned at the sight of that surname. With trembling fingers, I tore open the pull-tab.

Inside was a manila folder filled with high-resolution photographs. My hands shook so violently that the first few spilled onto the white duvet.

They were photos of me.

Me walking to my prenatal appointments at the medical center downtown three weeks ago. Me sitting alone in a park across from the bakery. Me stepping out of Dominic’s car. But worse than the surveillance was the legal document paperclipped to the back.

It was an official petition filed in the Baltimore Family Court: an emergency injunction asserting parental rights, signed by Ethan Vance. Attached was a notarized affidavit accusing me of adultery, claiming that our divorce had been fraudulently obtained under duress, and alleging that Dominic Varela had coerced me into marriage against my will.

*“I demand full biological testing and emergency custody upon birth,”* the final paragraph read, *“to protect my child from the criminal environment of the Varela syndicate.”*

A cold sweat broke out across my back. Ethan wasn't trying to hide in the shadows anymore. He was using the state legal system as a weapon, backed by someone with enough money to hire the city's most ruthless family law attorneys.

"Clara?"

Dominic’s voice came from the threshold. He had just walked into the room, holding an iPad in his hand. The moment his eyes landed on the scattered photographs on the bed and the blood drained from my face, his expression hardened into stone.

He crossed the room in two strides, picking up the legal petition. As he read the words Ethan had signed, the air in the master suite plummeted below freezing.

"He thinks he can use a judge to tear this family apart," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He thinks the law can protect him from me."
