Chapter 9 - The Shift

By midnight, the heavy social air had grown stifling. Vincent noticed my weary posture and quietly guided me away from the grand ballroom, leading me down an ornate, carpeted corridor to a secluded glass balcony overlooking the sprawling city lights below.

The cool night air rushed against my bare shoulders, bringing a welcome chill that cleared the champagne fog from my head.

"You were extraordinary tonight," Vincent said, leaning against the brass railing beside me. He had unbuttoned the top button of his dress shirt and loosened his bow tie, looking dangerously relaxed.

"I didn't trip over my train, so I consider it a victory," I laughed softly, leaning my hip against the rail to face him. "Thank you, Vincent. For... everything. For making me feel like I deserved to be here."

"You did deserve to be here," he replied immediately, stepping closer until the gap between us vanished. "You deserve far more than a room full of hypocrites in tuxedos."

The playful banter faded, replaced by a sudden, thick tension that crackled between us. The distance between our bodies felt charged with electricity. I looked up into his eyes, dark and fathomless, reflecting the distant city lights.

"When you kissed me in the diner," I whispered, my heart thumping a frantic rhythm against my ribs, "you said it wasn't pity. But you never said what it actually was."

Vincent’s gaze dropped to my lips, his jaw tightening. "It was something I've wanted to do since the first morning you set a cup of coffee in front of me and smiled like I was just a man, not a monster."

He reached out, his large, scarred hand sliding slowly around the back of my neck, his fingers tangling into the loose tendrils of my hair. His touch was electric, sending shivers pooling straight into my core.

"Emily," he murmured, his voice thick with raw restraint. "I have fought my entire life to conquer this city, to take everything I ever wanted by force. But with you... I want you to choose me. I want you to look at the darkness that surrounds me and tell me you aren't afraid."

"I was afraid of you at first," I admitted honestly, resting my hands against the crisp lapels of his tuxedo jacket. His heartbeat beneath my palms was racing just as fast as mine. "I was afraid of the violence, of the headlines. But standing here with you... I’m only afraid of how much I want this."

May you like

Vincent let out a low groan, his resistance finally shattering. He pulled me flush against his hard frame and captured my lips with a fierce, possessive hunger that stole the breath straight from my lungs. Unlike the gentle peck in the diner, this kiss was deep, consuming, and full of unspoken promises. I wrapped my arms around his broad neck, leaning completely into him, giving him every bit of the devotion he had craved.
